A Wright State University professor says he has discovered a way to slow tumor growth in patients suffering from breast cancer.

Julian Gomez-Cambronero, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Wright State?s Boonshoft School of Medicine, said his team found a protein responsible for the development of breast cancer tumors, as well as the spread of those tumors.

By introducing chemical inhibitors to the protein, called Phospholipase D or PLD, the team says it has shrunk tumor growth and rate of spread by 70 percent.

?Although it?s still early to tell, the application of these inhibitors to research in human tissue is the next step that could lead to better, less toxic treatments in the battle against breast cancer,? he said in a press release.

Cambronero?s findings were published in the medical publication Oncogene this month.

In a release, the school said Cambronero has brought in over $6 million in grant funding from state and federal agencies since he began his work at the school in 1995. Among agencies that have funded his work are National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.
