Baseball: Beckman Sweeps Marion

MARION, Iowa ? Marion coach Steve Fish wasn?t upset with how his team played in the first game of its doubleheader Friday night against Dyersville Beckman.

While the Indians lost that game, 10-1, Blazer pitcher Joey Lehmann was just better than the ?young? Marion team could handle.

It was how his team lost the second game, 11-7, that bothered the Marion coach.

?We?re in control of that game a little bit, we have 10 walks, we hit four guys, we have five errors. You can?t beat a team like Beckman and do that,? Fish said. ?I thought we just self-imploded and that was bothersome.?

The Indians came out swinging and went up 3-1 against Beckman in the first inning of the second game. Heading into the fifth inning leading 4-2, Marion used a play fake and a pickle to force an out at third.

After Beckman?s Logan Welling was hit by a pitch to tie the game at 4-4, Marion could not regain the lead.

Heading into the seventh inning trailing 6-4, Marion allowed Beckman to tally five more runs in what Marion?s Caleb Stekl hopes will be a learning moment for the team to stay mentally focused as the season progresses.

?We?ll fight through it and find a way,? Stekl said of how the team will move forward. ?We?re young and we?ll learn. We?ll just keep learning from this and stay confident and believe.?

Fish felt like the top of the seventh inning was a collapse when one error became more errors. He said he found it hard to put a finger on exactly what caused the errors that led to Beckman?s scoring five more runs in the seventh.

?These guys are young, and so we?ve been real patient with them,? Fish said. ?I said to them maybe our expectations for you have jumped up too far. Maybe we?re feeling pressure we shouldn?t be feeling. We?re the type of team where it?s a grind and a journey, learn from it and move on.?
