13 children among 19 dead in Qatar mall fire

At least 19 foreigners, including 13 children, were killed in a fire that ripped through an upscale shopping mall in Qatar on Monday, the country's interior ministry said.

Four of the dead children were Spanish, diplomatic sources in Madrid said.

In was not immediately clear what caused the blaze at the Villagio Mall in Doha's west end and Qatar's interior ministry said an investigation was under way.

"There don't seem to have been any fire alarms or sprinklers at the mall," a relative of a 2-year-old child who died in the fire told Reuters, speaking by phone from Qatar's Hamad hospital.

Smoke was seen billowing from the mall, which was evacuated. Ambulances and police vehicles blocked entry to the complex.

A ministry official told journalists none of the dead were Qataris. Four of the dead adults were teachers and the other two were civil defense personnel, the official said. Seventeen people were also wounded, including four children, the official added.

Many expatriates live in Qatar, a gas and oil-rich Gulf Arab state with one of the highest standards of living in the world.

The Villagio Mall, which opened in 2006, is an Italianate-themed shopping complex with a hotel, theme park and canal plied by gondolas.

Senses in the kitchen: Dales Food & Drink Festival, part 1

Yorkshire Dales is where I have been living for more than six years and is also a place where I will buy my first house when I win the lottery. I would buy two others elsewhere but first I have to be obscenely rich. Dales are part of the national park, so you can easily find here lots of lovely nature, but also fantastic food. Not only Dales as a matter of fact, but whole Yorkshire is a place of very good quality produce.

I was fortunate to visit local Dales Food and Drink Festival in Leyburn (6-8 May). Three days, twelve thousand visitors, over eighty exibitors, good food, even bettr drink, music, entertainment, farming and more.

I hope you will enjoy my photostory.

I am not a big fan of cupcakes, so popular in Britain, however these look adrable and I am not suprised that some people are willing to have then on their wedding day. Beautifully decorated, little pieces of art.

"No denying times is hard, sir! Even harder than the worst pies in London!" (Sweeney Todd). Again something very British and very good. I have tried three different pies and every single one of them was delicious, not like those Helena Bonham - Carter baked in "Sweeney Todd". As a matter of fact these were the best pork pies I ever had.? Farmhouse Direct? make their pies from rare breed called Gloucester Old Spot, crust melts in your mouth and the toppings are very, very interesting and compliment the meaty filling very well - red onion marmalade and Leicester cheese or apple and cider chutney.
Porridge in the morning is so British, isn't it? :) This one was particularly interesting - a mix of oats, quinoa and cinnamon. Festival of Food and Drink would be nothing without good tea. Beautiful flowering teas and wide selection of accessorize and leaf teas from? The Tea Experience.

Morris dance? form of traditional dance usually accompanied by music. Implements sticks, swords and bells may also be wielded by the dancers. "So this is what you do when you don't have sex anymore" - said my partner. No interest in this whatsoever if you ask me. By the way my partner has the same opinion about playing golf.?

Fantastic cold pressed Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil. No nonsense, chemical free. Plain or with a hint of chilli or basil - very, very tasty. Not only this oil is produced using rapeseed from local farms but the company? actively support low food miles and ensure that their bottles and labels are all produced using British companies. I like it, I buy it.
I mentioned about these cordials made by Country Cordials in my post about the lavender cordial. Wide selection and interesting flavours of cordials that I found on the festival inspired my to experiment more with my homemade cordials. I only bought one bottle - wild nettle flavour, but the decision was hard. What would you say about rhubarb, orange and ginger in one bottle??
Time for lunch! What you can see on my tray is authentic Indian cuisine by Prett Tejura, who had her theater? of cooking the day before. I like it a lot, she seems to be such a nice person and experienced cook. Love the idea of cookery class (based in Leeds) as well as catering dinner parties! She also sells her homemade pickles and chutneys. Please don't be fooled by my outfit, it was very cold, at the beginning of May it was around 5-8 C! I am fortunate to have great meat supplier locally in my favourite local deli called?Campbells of Leyburn. It is worth mentioning because it is quite impressing that this shop has been run by one family since 1868. Today it is the fifth generation of Campbell family running the business. And the butchers... Lovely lads, who are always wiling to help and advise and those who I make cake for when I need odd ingredients such as beef bones. Kevin in the front cooking burgers.
Kippers, something not everyone like, but very tasty, especially when freshly smoked. This was? Port of Lancashire smokehouse. By the way - I am hoping to build our own this year.
Daleside Brewery was hosting the Yorkshire Dales Real Ale and Cider Festival which included more than 30 different beers and 10 different ciders. It is a shame that we had to drive back home, as we would try more, and more. As huge fans of? Monty Python we could not resist Holy Grail. I absolutely love this word game!
And this is Black Sheep one of my favourite to drink and to cook with produced as well as Holy Grail by Black Sheep Brewery in Masham.

Animal hoarding cases burden shelters, taxpayers

BY JOHN F. HILL AND JANET ZIMMERMAN

A group of 20 dogs living for nearly a year at the Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto has plenty of admirers and potential adopters, but no chance of being placed in a home.

The dogs ? a collection that includes wide-eyed Chihuahua and terrier mixes, a friendly black Lab, a boxer and five newborn puppies ? were seized from the Menifee home of a woman accused of child endangerment and animal cruelty. Traci Kathleen Murray has declined to give up her pets while her court case has dragged on for 11 months.

The humane society must take care of the dogs until her case is resolved, at the expense of taxpayers. By the end of May, the case will have cost the city of Menifee about $75,000, more than half of the city?s annual shelter budget.

The case is not unique. Every year, Inland animal shelters spend thousands caring for dogs, cats and even horses seized from the homes of people accused of animal abuse. Some, such as a suspected pit bull fighting case in San Bernardino, can last years and drive animal care costs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the Menifee case, Ramona shelter volunteer Denise Glass has started an online petition to urge Riverside County court officials to bring the issue to a fast conclusion. She said she started it to raise exposure for the plight of the dogs..." ?More

Richard Ford finds his place in 'Canada'

It's tempting to call Richard Ford a writer of place. Beginning with his first novel, 1976's "A Piece of My Heart," the 68-year-old author has tended toward the border among landscape, language and character, using setting to help drive his narratives. Think of Frank Bascombe, who in "The Sportswriter," "Independence Day" and "The Lay of the Land" drifts across the bland surfaces of New Jersey, seeking not stimulation but a stasis similar to that of the suburbs where he resides. Or the people of Ford's Montana books, "Rock Springs" and "Wildlife": etched by the stark environment in which they find themselves, staring down the elements of their lives.

It's as if, Ford wants us to imagine, we live at the mercy of larger forces, forces outside ourselves, forces that determine who we are. And yet, he insists by phone from his home in East Boothbay, Maine, that's not the case ? or not exactly, anyway. "Growing up in Mississippi," he recalls, "and being told that this defined me, set me on a path away from place as generative. When I started writing, I took the Toulouse-Lautrec attitude that place is background scenery. I didn't want the place I came from to be responsible for me."

What Ford is getting at is a dual set of burdens: that of Southern history ? "[W]e lived in an absurd racist society," he told the Paris Review in 1996 ? and of the Southern literary tradition, which, encompassing William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams and Carson McCullers, left him feeling "there was no place here for me." With his new novel, "Canada" (Ecco: 420 pp., $27.99), however, he has come to acknowledge that the issue of place is perhaps less clear-cut, more deterministic, than he may have thought.

The book, which takes place primarily in Montana and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, is a return, of sorts; set in summer and fall 1960, it is narrated by 15-year-old Dale Parsons, who must learn to fend for himself after his parents are arrested for robbing a bank. Dale is of a piece with Joe Brinson, the teenage protagonist of "Wildlife," whose life too comes unraveled in 1960. (Several of the stories in "Rock Springs" are also set in 1959 or 1960 and involve the travails of adolescent boys.) In that sense, place may be not only geographic but also experiential, a matter of both exterior and interior territory ? although either way, it echoes through.

"'Place means nothing,' I wrote in 'Independence Day,'" Ford says with a rueful laugh. "I was throwing down a gauntlet. But if I tried to make that true, I will concede now that I may not have been fully successful. Because when I write sentences set in Montana, I write different kinds of sentences. So there must be some generative relationship."

"Canada" is very much about the interplay of character and landscape, although in this case the primary landscape has to do with family. That's because Dale, his parents and his twin sister, Berner, are in many ways isolated, a result of the peripatetic nature of his father's work with the Air Force as well as the family's status as outsiders, who naturally hold themselves apart. Ford introduces this via Dale's mother, a woman who prides herself on a skeptical intelligence.

"These were the values that caused her never to want Berner and me to assimilate in the places my father's Air Force job took us," he observes early in the novel. "Those places, she felt, would 'dilute and corrupt' what was good and important about us and render us stale and ordinary in terms specific to Mississippi, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, places she had low regard for and considered unenlightened."

Right there, in two straightforward sentences, Ford establishes the central conflict of the novel: between family on the one hand and community on the other ? or, more directly, between personality and place. Plot, in such a context, is secondary; what's important is how the characters react. "More than events," he explains, "I'm interested in consequence. What happens after the big event? That's when life gets lived." To make this explicit, he tips off the main dramatic action from the opening lines. "First," he begins the novel, "I'll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders, which happened later."

For Ford, the diffusion of narrative tension opens up another, more essential tension ? that of a character coming to resolution with himself. This is the arc Dale traverses throughout "Canada," and it echoes not just the author's earlier Montana books but also his Bascombe trilogy, which is all about the process of coming to terms.

"With Dale," Ford says, "I tried to combine his adult and his childhood voice, to use two vocalizations: a 15-year-old boy and a 65-year-old man." The point is to show how he's reckoned with his past, even the parts for which he cannot make amends. "There's a debt to pay," Ford goes on, "but there's also a sense of accepting who you are. That's happiness, when you're 65 years old, to make do with what you're given, to come to a position of assent."

That's what Ford has been writing toward for much of his career, going back to "A Piece of My Heart," which moves between two characters who, he suggests, represent "the two sides of my brain, one sensation and the other intellect." In "Canada," though, he's integrated the impulse in a broader way. As much as Dale recalls Ford's other Montana adolescents, he's equally reminiscent of Bascombe, looking back from the second half of his life in a voice equally piercing and reflective. "What I want to do," Ford says, "is to get at something like Walter Benjamin's idea of instruction, to illuminate the struggle of existence. What's important to Dale is not what he's been through, so much as his desire to find some purpose. He ends up happy because he has made himself useful."

This is a traditional definition of art, of fiction: that it should instruct or enlighten us, that it should illuminate something about how we live. Yet at its center is a related notion: that the line between the ordinary and the extraordinary is often a tenuous one.

"To me," Ford writes, tracing Dale's parents' slow drift from one side of the law to the other, "it's the edging closer to the point of no return that's fascinating: all along the trip, chatting, sharing confidences, exchanging endearments ? since their life was officially still intact. ? How amazingly far normalcy extends; how you can keep it in sight as if you were on a raft sliding out to sea, the stick of land growing smaller and smaller. ? You notice it, or you don't notice it. But you're already too far away, and all is lost." That, he claims, is "the heart of the book, that these two experiences exist side by side, that we can always pull back from the line until we cross it." In a way, it's a bit of a commonplace, but then, this is part of the novelistic enterprise, as well.

"There's no such thing as commonplace," Ford argues, "there's no such thing as ordinary. What I've found is that each thing becomes prologue to something we didn't expect. I didn't expect to write again about Montana, but it turned out there was more to say. What I've discovered about myself is that I'm a goer-backer" ? and here, he could be talking about Dale, or Bascombe, or any of his characters ? "I'm just a guy who goes back and gets more."

White Sox stay hot as Dunn hits 15th HR

By ANDREW SELIGMAN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:23 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - The way A.J. Pierzynski sees it, there's no reason the Chicago White Sox can't contend until the end of the season. They just might if they keep this up.

Adam Dunn hit his 15th homer, Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo both went deep for the second time in as many nights, and the White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 9-3 on Friday night for their seventh win in eight games.

Pierzynski also tripled and scored three runs while driving in two. Viciedo knocked in two runs and scored twice, and the White Sox gave Jose Quintana (1-0) all the support he needed in his first major league start.

"We have a good feeling," Pierzynski said. "There's been some ups and downs, but at the end of the day, when we come in, we know that there's a positive vibe. Guys want to do well. Guys are trying to do well. They're working their tails off to do well. We know we're in for a dogfight, but at the end of the day, we like where we're at. We like our chances. If we continue to pitch and get some hits like we have, we should be able to win."

The White Sox again used the long ball to take out the AL Central leaders after hitting five homers Thursday against Minnesota. Dunn drove a two-run shot in the first after Cleveland scored a run in the top half. Pierzynski connected leading off the second, and Chicago broke open a one-run game in the sixth, scoring three times with two outs while chasing Jeanmar Gomez (3-3).

Alexei Ramirez knocked him out with an RBI single after Pierzynski and Viciedo walked, and Alejandro De Aza drove in two more runs with a bases loaded single off Jairo Asencio to make it 6-2, sending Cleveland to just its third loss in 11 games.

The White Sox added three more with two outs in the seventh, with Alex Rios reaching on a single to third that initially was ruled an error and scoring on Pierzynski's triple before Viciedo hit a two-run homer.

It's not what the Indians envisioned after sweeping a three-game series from Detroit, the team many thought would win the division. But the second-place White Sox are looking good at the moment.

They swept the Cubs, took two of three from Minnesota, and they didn't blink with the schedule taking a tougher turn, pulling within 2 1/2 games of Cleveland on Friday.

"I think it's fun that way," the Indians' Jason Kipnis said. "It was good what we did against Detroit here at home, but now we got to turn our focus to these guys. These guys are closer in the division than Detroit is right now so it's not like, `Oh, we beat Detroit -- we did it.' ...This team is good and we know that."

While Gomez simply had a rough night, giving up six runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, Quintana gave the White Sox what they needed.

Called up from Triple-A Charlotte with John Danks going on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left shoulder, the 23-year-old left-hander allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. He wasn't quite as dominant against the Indians this time, after pitching 5 2-3 scoreless innings of relief against them in his only other appearance on May 7, but he was good enough and showed some poise, particularly in a tight spot in the fifth.

With runners on second and third, he retired Asdrubal Cabrera on a foul pop and Carlos Santana on a groundout to end the threat.

"I knew I needed to get these outs," Quintana said through an interpreter. "It was dire for us to have this win, and so all I did was go out there and concentrate on each pitch that I was pitching and just try to get a strike on each one that I was throwing."

Notes: Cabrera was replaced at shortstop in the seventh because of tightness in his left hamstring, and Santana, the catcher, left in the eighth after being struck by a foul tip. Manager Manny Acta said they could have stayed in if necessary but will be evaluated on Saturday. ... The Indians called up SS Juan Diaz from Double-A Akron and optioned starting pitcher Zach McAllister to Triple-A Columbus before the game. Acta said Diaz will likely be sent back to the minors on Monday, when pitcher Josh Tomlin (sore right wrist) is expected to be activated from the 15-day DL. Tomlin threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Thursday and reported no pain. ... Travis Hafner underwent an MRI on Thursday on his right knee and took an anti-inflammatory for irritation in the meniscus. He did not travel to Chicago. ... White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham made a neat play in the third when he raced back to make a sliding catch on Santana's foul down the right-field line. ... Jake Peavy starts Saturday for Chicago, with Derek Lowe going for the Indians.

Chinese WTO suit strikes back at U.S. duties

GENEVA (Reuters) - China launched a complaint at the World Trade Organization on Friday against U.S. import duties on 22 Chinese products that the United States says are unfairly priced or subsidized, including solar panels and steel products.

"China firmly opposes the abuse of trade remedy measures and trade protectionism," China's Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

China's complaint counterattacks in areas where the United States has hit Chinese products with punitive tariffs, known as anti-dumping duties or countervailing duties, in recent years.

In Washington, U.S. trade officials criticized Beijing for bringing the case because they said the U.S. Commerce Department was already working to address issues raised by China and which stem from an earlier WTO appellate panel ruling.

"China's resort to dispute settlement is premature and not an appropriate use of dispute settlement system resources," said Nkenge Harmon, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative's office.

"This step by China suggests that China does not really care what the United States does; rather, China has determined without benefit of the facts that whatever the United States does will fall short of what China would like to see," Harmon said.

Beijing launched the action the same day that a WTO panel issued a confidential ruling in a high-stakes case aimed at prying open China's huge electronic payments market for U.S. firms like Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

The U.S. Trade Representative's office in Washington confirmed it had received the decision, but said it could not comment until it is made public in coming weeks.

Visa, MasterCard and American Express also declined comment on the case, which dates to late 2010 and challenges China UnionPay's domestic monopoly over electronic payment services.

The United States argues China failed to follow through on its commitment to allow foreign companies to offer electronic payments services by December 2006, five years after its entry into the World Trade Organization.

U.S. SAYS STUDYING COMPLAINT

China said its complaint covers exports worth $7.3 billion, encompassing diverse products like citric acid, kitchen shelving and lawn groomers. It also includes wind towers, even though the U.S. Commerce Department's preliminary decision on those wind tower imports is not due until Wednesday.

Eight days ago, the U.S. Commerce Department set punitive tariffs on Chinese solar panels, which it said Chinese exporters had dumped on the U.S. market at unfairly low prices.

The United States hit Chinese steel pipe imports with hefty anti-dumping duties in 2010. Later that year it launched a trade suit over Chinese government grants to wind power manufacturers, but it did not pursue the case.

Harmon said the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative was studying the complaint and would respond in accordance with WTO rules.

"The Obama administration strongly supports the trade remedy laws, and was the first administration ever to apply a 421 safeguard to imports from China," she said. A 421 safeguard is a U.S. measure that allows manufacturers to request emergency restrictions on Chinese imports in response to a surge.

COMPLAINT WON

Last year China won a WTO complaint, similar to Friday's, against U.S. duties on imports of Chinese steel pipes, off-road tires and woven sacks. U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk called that decision "a clear case of overreaching" by the judges.

Many of China's grievances might have been dealt with by a U.S. court decision last year, which struck down the Commerce Department's ability to impose countervailing duties on "non-market economies" like China.

But the U.S. Congress voted to restore it in March, ensuring U.S. duties on about two dozen Chinese goods stayed in place.

China's new complaint, the seventh it has filed against the United States since it joined the WTO in 2001, comes as WTO chief Pascal Lamy flies to China for a four-day visit, during which he will meet Vice Premier Wang Qishan.

The legal process begins with China holding talks with the United States to seek an amicable settlement.

It may move to arbitration if the two cannot agree, and the United States could be forced to scrap its duties and even compensate China if it is found to have broken the rules.

The dispute adds more heat to a trade relationship that has barely stopped simmering, even though the United States has seen signs of China "making progress" towards easing restrictions on its currency, one of the biggest causes of friction.

The U.S. Treasury again shied away from calling China a currency manipulator in its semi-annual report on Friday.

Although the overall pace of China's export growth has slumped to single digits this year, its trade surplus with the United States set a record of more than $295 billion in 2011, putting extra pressure on U.S. manufacturers whose markets are still recovering from the financial crisis.

Lamy has repeatedly warned that the world needs to be on guard against any rise of protectionism in the wake of the financial crisis, although the threat of a global trade war has not yet become reality.

U.S. and Chinese politicians also deny they are in a trade war, but global trade tensions are rising, with Latin America becoming an increasing focus of trade disputes. On Friday, one of the most heated disputes flared into a European Union suit over Argentina's import restrictions.

India, which launched a trade complaint over U.S. duties on steel last month, is also threatening to take the United States to the WTO over U.S. visa fees for high-skilled foreign workers.

The WTO is also expected to rule soon on another Chinese-U.S. trade dispute. The case involves Chinese duties on U.S. exports of a specialty steel product known as grain-oriented electrical steel that Washington says are unjustified.

Freelance Writing Resources: A Review | PixelsmithStudios | We ...

One of the hardest things about working as a freelance writer is seeking viable sources for worthwhile new projects. For the greatest chances of success, know your worth, don?t pay for job listings and be ready to submit your best writing samples (and maybe even take a test or two).

Craigslist

Craigslist is the unsung hero of the freelance writer job market. Not only do big-time employers hire freelancers there, there are a variety of projects available for copywriters, bloggers, news writers, whitepaper writers and more.

The keys to finding project success on Craigslist are twofold. First, don?t just check the writing and editing listings?make sure you check the writing ?Gigs? too. Plus, review postings in both sections a few times a day. So many people apply that the early bird definitely catches the worm.

ODesk and Elance

Among the more popular platforms for working writers are ODesk and Elance. Job seekers take skills evaluations, upload samples, and bid on posted projects. Although there are many nicely paid projects on both sites, you?ll find yourself competing against English-speaking writers from Bangladesh, Thailand, and other foreign places.

No big deal? Think again. These writers are willing to work for $1 or $2 per page, well below what Americans and other native English-speakers typically earn. As a result, to succeed on these platforms you must spend a great deal of time combing through hundreds of employers to find the few who need high quality skills.

Interact Media, Demand Media and WriterAccess

Some freelance platforms allow you to select tasks as your schedule permits, once you?ve passed their evaluation system. Interact Media, Demand Media and WriterAccess are three such sites. WriterAccess vets writers most thoroughly, although Demand is changing how they hire and use their freelance resources.

Copywriting Opportunities

If you have a knack for sales then copywriting may be a good fit. SEO services companies offer tremendous opportunities for writers who enjoy writing for blogs and webpages.? A word to the wise? Find yourself a reputable Internet marketing company with an excellent, nationwide reputation.

You can also reach out directly to businesses that already have websites but need better copy. Coupon sites are another source of income that can fill in the days in between bigger projects. For each, explain how your writing skills will drive revenue and you?ll have yourself a new project.

Checking ? and Using ? Your Feedback

Most sites provide editor feedback to writers and it?s a valuable resource. Don?t waste it.

Successful independent writers always check to see what edits were made to their work and why. In this business, it isn?t enough to just get paid?you must learn to vigorously self-edit, improve your sentence structure and variety and eliminate the problems that editors mention frequently.

Demonstrate that you care about your craft and you will earn yourself a stable of loyal repeat clients. Slack off and prove you?re just in it for the paycheck, and you?ll spend more time searching for work than you actually spend working.

Now that you know more about the best resources for beginning a career writing online, learn more about SEO services companies.

Study of workplace safety inspections: no harm to profits | New York ...

Manhattan business owners often complain that workplace safety inspections cause needless red tape that ties up and hurts their bottom lines. But a new study says the opposite is true: safety inspections not only reduce injuries to employees, but they also enhance the value and profits of inspected companies.

Researchers conducted a 10-year study of hundreds of randomly inspected businesses and found that those inspected companies experienced a 9.4 reduction in injury claims with no reductions in sales or profits.

Even better news for the business owners: their inspected companies saved an average of 26 percent in workers' compensation costs in the four years after an inspection, compared to similar businesses not inspected at random.

Business owners like to say the federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a jobs-killing bureaucratic nightmare that should reduce or even end its random inspections. Owners would prefer a voluntary worker safety compliance program.

But a Harvard Business School professor and co-author of the study say those complaining owners have it exactly backwards: "These inspections ironically appear to be creating value for the firms that they are visiting in terms of reduced workers' comp costs and frequency of injuries."

The business owners and politicians who say regulations kill American competitiveness are ignoring the billions in savings researchers say companies rack up by keeping employees on the job and healthy.

New York employees who are injured on the job are typically entitled to workers' compensation benefits. If you've been injured and have been unfairly denied needed and deserved benefits, speak with an attorney experienced in helping clients get their medical costs covered and a portion of their wages replaced by workers' comp.

Dynamic duo leads Miami back to Eastern finals

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? With another season on the brink, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James took their two-man game to new heights.

Just like that, the Miami Heat and a Big Three-Minus-One are headed back to the Eastern Conference finals.

Wade scored 41 points, James added 28 and the Heat finished off the once-frisky Indiana Pacers 105-93 in Game 6 Thursday night, advancing to face either Boston or Philadelphia in the next round.

The way Miami's dynamic duo is playing, it may not matter who's got next.

"They're going to be tough to beat by anybody," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said.

This was a 4-2 triumph that came down to a trilogy, Wade and James responding with the most remarkable week of their high-powered partnership, just when it looked as though the Heat were down and might be out.

Over the course of three dazzling games, James scored 98 points, grabbed 34 rebounds and dished out 24 assists. Wade had 99 points, 22 rebounds and 11 assists. Chris Bosh, sidelined by an abdominal injury, wasn't missed at all.

"In the regular season, we've had some good games," Wade said. "But I don't know if we've ever had three in a row like that in the playoffs, the way we played off each other."

Of course, nothing less than an NBA title will do in South Beach.

Two series down, two to go.

One week earlier, Miami was down 2-1 after getting thumped 94-75 in Indianapolis. The fired-up Pacers had another game on their home court and a chance to build a commanding lead.

Wade and James simply refused to let it happen.

"We understand that when Chris went out, we had to step up," D-Wade said. "The team looked to us to lead."

The banged-up Heat will get a chance to relax a couple of days before worrying about the next opponent, who will be determined in Game 7 at Boston on Saturday. The conference finals start Monday in Miami.

Bosh hopes to return at some point, but it might not matter.

Not the way Wade and James are playing.

"Chris Bosh is an awesome basketball player, but when he goes down, that just means more touches for LeBron and Wade," Vogel said. "That's not exactly an advantage."

The Heat rallied from an early 11-point deficit, riding the hot hand of Wade in the opening half. He scored 26 points by the break, tying Tim Hardaway's 16-year-old franchise record for most playoff points in the first two quarters. James hit consecutive baskets with just over a minute remaining to close it out.

David West led Indiana with 24 points and all five starters were in double figures. Balance, it turned out, was no match for Wade and James.

"Guys are disappointed but understand that it's not our time yet," West said.

In a game of spurts, the decisive one came in the closing minutes of the third quarter.

The Pacers tied it at 66 on Darren Collison's 3-pointer, but it was all Heat the rest of the period. They closed on a 13-3 run, capped by Mario Chalmers' buzzer-beating 3 from the corner. Wade, who was on the bench getting his customary breather at the end of the quarter, leaped from his seat as the ball left Chalmers' hand at the far end, raced along the baseline and pumped his fist when it swished.

When Chalmers raced toward the Miami bench, Wade greeted him near the free throw line with a low-five.

"We just had a bad stretch," West said. "They got us in the third quarter."

Cheerleading aside, D-Wade did his best work while in the game. He dropped 11-of-16 shooting on the Pacers in the first half, but also made sure the MVP stayed involved, dishing off a behind-the-back pass to James for a thunderous jam.

"They're too good," West said. "They pressure you all over the place."

There was none of the nastiness that marked Game 5, when a bunch of flagrant fouls resulted in suspensions for two Miami players, co-captain Udonis Haslem and backup center Dexter Pittman. Pacers president Larry Bird was so disgusted with his team's performance in a 115-83 loss that he accused them of going "soft."

Toughness wasn't the problem this time. This was merely a Miami team on a mission, a mission that began in the summer of 2010 when the Heat signed James and Bosh to join Wade in a seemingly unbeatable trio. There was a glitzy introduction and predictions of multiple championships, which left the rest of the league seething and plenty of people cheering when Miami was knocked off in the NBA finals by the Dallas Mavericks last season.

Shaking off that disappointment, James had perhaps his greatest season yet. But it was Wade who took control in the decisive game against the Pacers. He sliced into the lane, throwing up a one-handed shot that looked like it might go over the backboard, only to catch the top of the glass and drop through, barely touching the twine. He delivered one final blow when he split West and George Hill, banking in the shot despite taking a knee from Hill that sent the Heat guard tumbling to the court.

"We just didn't have enough yet," Vogel said, "but we'll be back."

Chalmers finished with 15 points, while Mike Miller stepped up to provide some quality minutes, scoring 12 points on four 3-pointers to help fill the void without Haslem, Pittman and Bosh.

When Miller wasn't in the game, he stretched out along the baseline to cope with his various aches and pains, more comfortable that way than sitting in a chair. When coach Erik Spoelstra called his number, Miller summoned several of his teammates to help lift him up.

"He might be the toughest guy on the team," Wade said.

The Big Two aren't too shabby, either.

Notes: Indiana started 8 of 9 from the field, but went just 26 of 61 (43 percent) the rest of the way. ... The Heat held the Pacers to an average of less than 40 points in the second half over the last three games. ... Miami had only 10 turnovers, its fewest in the series.

Facebook, banks sued over pre-IPO analyst calls

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc and banks including Morgan Stanley were sued by the social networking leader's shareholders, who claimed the defendants hid Facebook's weakened growth forecasts ahead of its $16 billion initial public offering.

The defendants, who also include Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, were accused of concealing from investors during the IPO marketing process "a severe and pronounced reduction" in revenue growth forecasts, resulting from increased use of its app or website through mobile devices. Facebook went public last week.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Wednesday, according to a law firm for the plaintiffs. A day earlier, a similar lawsuit by a different investor was filed in a California state court, according to a law firm involved in that case.

In the New York case, shareholders said research analysts at several underwriters had lowered their business forecasts for Facebook during the IPO process, but that these changes were "selectively disclosed by defendants to certain preferred investors" rather than to the public generally.

"The value of Facebook common stock has declined substantially and plaintiffs and the class have sustained damages as a result," the complaint said.

Representatives of Facebook and Morgan Stanley did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Facebook shares fell 18.4 percent from their $38 IPO price in the first three days of trading, reducing the value of stock sold in the IPO by more than $2.9 billion.

Portraits of a queen: When the monarch becomes the subject

National Portrait Gallery, London

'Lightness of Being' by Chris Levine, 2004.

By Peter Jeary, NBC News

LONDON ? She is the most photographed woman in the world and no monarch has been more depicted in portraits.

Her image is everywhere ? from our English bank bills and postage stamps to countless photographs in newspapers and magazines. While not a royalist, I never tire of looking at pictures of Queen Elizabeth II, but I cannot tell you why.

Until now.

National Portrait Gallery, London

Queen Elizabeth II by Hiroshi Sugimoto, 1999.

Paul Woodhouse, curator of 'The Queen: Art and Image', an exhibition that recently opened at London's National Portrait Gallery, told me my fascination was shared by many.

"What we all try to do is understand the enigma," he said. "It's a paradox. We have all these images of her, but for most of us, we actually know very little about the queen."

And it's true. By looking at a range of different images?and listening to her occasional public statements, I hope to glean a little more about the woman, the great-grandmother, the human being behind the icon.

An early visitor to the exhibition, Gareth Jones, from Camden in London, agrees.

"You think you know things about her," he said. "But it's not until you see it laid-out like this that you start to appreciate the life she has led over sixty years. It's powerful."

Fit for a queen: 60 years of style

Jones, a self-described fan of the queen, found one work particularly revealing.

Looking at Chris Levine's 2004 holographic photograph?'Lightness of Being'?was like "intruding on a private moment, as the queen closes her eyes, almost in meditation," he said.

Queen Elizabeth II, by Pietro Annigoni, 1969.

Yvonne Bennett, from Sevenoaks, outside of London, was captivated by the same image.

"I could stand and look at it all day," she said.

Among the dozens of varied pictures, photographs and mixed media in the exhibition, one portrait stands out.? Amid the Pop Art, punk art and high art depictions, Hiroshi Sugimoto's 1999 portrait feels wrong and out of place.

One visitor wondered why it lacked the warmth of other pictures. We then discovered that the photograph is of a waxwork, and not the monarch herself.

Queen?Elizabeth II's lunch for world monarchs sparks controversy

There was a tangible difference between that portrait and, for example, a much earlier, highly formal painting by Pietro Annigoni, dating from 1954-5, the early years of her reign.

In the Annigoni, the young queen is noble and remote, like an empress, but also very human.

While the exhibit tells a story of a changing monarchy, it is also obvious that the queen has carefully controlled her image over the years.

Kim Dong-Yoo's mosaic 'Elizabeth vs Diana', left, is made up of hundreds of tiny images of Princess Diana. A close-up view is shown at right.

"But when you compare portraits from one decade with another, you start to understand the preoccupations of the time, and then you appreciate that the queen has had to face some very dark times,? said Bridget Findlay of Portsmouth.?

Video: Queen?seen as inspiration at?Jubilee?parade

Findlay?s favorite was a reflection of those dark times: 'Elizabeth vs Diana' is a mosaic of the queen's head created from tiny images of Princess Diana, her erstwhile daughter-in-law who died in a car crash in 1997 after an embarrassingly public split with Prince Charles.

"It's simply startling," Findlay said.? "I never expected to see that and it took me a while to work out what it was."

The Queen makes her first televised Christmas broadcast on Dec. 25,1957.

Kim Dong-Yoo's 2007 mosaic ? one of several works that would be seen as irreverent if not almost disrespectful ? is confirmation that this is not an official exhibition sanctioned by Buckingham Palace. Instead, curator Paul Moorhouse called it a celebration for a diamond jubilee.

If I had to choose one image that summed up the exhibit for me, it would be a small, rather insignificant newspaper photograph of a family gathered around a TV set watching the queen's first televised?Christmas message broadcast in 1957.

She speaks while we, the observers, look and listen. Six decades on, are we any closer to knowing the most depicted woman in history?
