Unpacking Key Roles in the Ecosystem ? #ECOSYS

In the the day to day crunch of teaching, parenting and the every day, it?s far too easy to lose track of the key roles we play in advancing the health and well-being of our communities.

To me, in a very real way, the ecosystem is the community.

We live in a complex web of relationships that tie us together, perpetually painting new horizons for what is possible.

A few weeks ago, I debuted some new thinking in the Key Roles of Collaboration (Ch.14), a deep dive into the dynamics that all of us navigate when we seek to teach, to learn, to connect, or in some subtle ways, to improve the stake of ourselves and those around us.

What are the key takeaways here? ?I think there are 5 key points worth exploring in the context of the K12 Ecosys. ?Let?s take them on:

  • Q1. How can ?connectors? use cross-over interests to drive change?
  • Q2. How do ?catalysts? bring new energy to old problems?
  • Q3. Can ?analysts? summarize data effectively to change the vibe real time, or does data belong offline?
  • Q4. How do ?moderators? balance affinity & diversity?
  • Q5. Why is ?aggregation? the most heavily missed role in social collaboration?

More on this topic? ?It?s a key one. ?You?ll find about this in Chapter 14 of ?The DNA of Collaboration on Amazon.

Meantime, I?d love to hear back on your thoughts.

- Chris Jones, aka @sourcepov,?founder of the K12 Ecosys and author of The DNA of Collaboration

The I-40 Kitchen: 50 States of MoFo: Tennessee Teacakes

With today, the 2012 Vegan Month of Food comes to a close.?? Before getting to today's recipe, let me reassure any concerned readers that posting here will continue until I have completed all 50 states (plus DC, for which I have a very good idea, if I say so myself).?? Daily posting has been kicking my behind, so the remaining 20 will follow slowly, perhaps one or two per week.? Anyone who knows me in real life knows I am stubborn and will most certainly finish.?

As I grew up in Tennessee and live in Nashville, there has been a lot of Tennessee food posted on this blog.?? So what should I make for this project?? Tennessee Teacakes (or T-cakes) came to mind.? This little confection is somewhere in the middle of the cupcake-to-brownie range. ?If a vanilla cupcake and a butterscotch blondie had a baby, this might be it. ?Teacakes became quite popular when a local woman started a business making them, with public praise from former Tennessee resident Oprah.? Unfortunately, this business owner died of cancer last year and her bakery closed.

There are a number of recipes online for Tennessee Teacakes.?? As this one is apparently quite close to the Oprah-endorsed variety, I took it as a starting point.? Here's the veganized version:

1 c. all purpose flour
1/4 t. salt
1/4 t. baking powder
1 c. brown sugar (the vegan organic kind if possible)
1/2 c. vegan margarine (e.g., Earth Balance)
1 T. vanilla
1/4 t. apple cider vinegar
4 oz. vegan cream cheese (storebought or homemade)
3 T. nondairy milk whipped with 1 T. ground flax until gooey

Mix together the flour, salt, and baking powder.

Combine the margarine and brown sugar in a saucepan and cook until melted.? Whisk in the vanilla, vinegar, vegan cream cheese, and milk/flax.? (You could add some vegan butter flavoring if you want to get crazy.)? Gently stir in the dry ingredients, only until combined.

Pour into 12 lined muffin cups.? The cups should be about 1/2 full.? Bake at 350F for about 15-17 minutes.? If in doubt, a toothpick should test clean.? Dust with powdered sugar before serving. ? You might want to double the recipe. ?We ate half the batch almost immediately.

Back to the larger project...? The remaining states are:? Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming (with a bonus 51st post for the District of Columbia). ? If you have suggestions for any of these, please leave them in the comments!

Real estate marketplace Zillow releases iPad app ... - The Next Web

Zillow, a publicly-traded real estate marketplace, just launched its free Mortgage Marketplace App for the iPad. This new application is designed to help home buyers find out what are their mortgage choices and how to find the right loan.

With the addition of this app, Zillow now has a total of 15 mobile apps in its portfolio. It claims that it also has the most popular suite of mobile real estate apps that will meet the needs of all home shoppers. Zillow, in case you didn?t know, is a service that helps you find your new home in any location. It brands itself as ?your edge in real estate? and looks to be your resource for all your home buying needs.

Buyers who download this iPad application will find that there are numerous tools at their disposal in order to help get the right home for them. The company says that its Mortgage Marketplace App creates a transparent lending marketplace where borrowers can easily connect with reputable lenders in order to find the right payment plan for both parties.

The app combines this loan shopping experience with simple calculators and even animated charts to give the buyer a chance to understand what?s going on and how they can be a part of the process, not idly standing by and wondering what?s going on.

ipad withdevice 520x397 Real estate marketplace Zillow releases iPad app giving home buyers the tools to find the right loan

What Zillow?s Mortgage Marketplace App will do is utilize what it calls an ?intuitive, visual interface? to share with the user how much they can afford to spend on their home, calculate how long it will take to pay off their mortgage, and whether refinancing is advantageous to their situation.

Users can easily and anonymously request personalized loan quotes from multiple providers while also reading through over 22,000 customer reviews of lenders in Zillow?s library.

Lastly, this iPad application has a ?Get Pre-Approved? section that will work with preferred Zillow lenders who have the ability to approve borrowers before any real estate shopping begins.

With more than 35 million unique users accessing Zillows mobile apps just last month, this new app could help simplify the home buying process and empower the user to feel at ease with their iPad instead of having to move to a laptop in order to do exactly the same thing that they can do on mobile devices.

Zillow?s Mortgage Marketplace app can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App store.

Israeli, French leaders push for Iran sanctions

PARIS (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won pledges Wednesday from France's president to push harder for new sanctions against Iran to keep it from developing nuclear weapons ? but no sympathy for any possible Israeli military strike against Iran.

In a visit to Paris, Netanyahu praised French pressure on Iran and called for "even tougher sanctions" than the ones currently in place.

"The sanctions are taking a bite out of Iran's economy ... unfortunately they have not stopped the Iranian program," he said.

Israel has been an outspoken critic of Iran's disputed nuclear program, repeatedly saying that Tehran is well on the way to developing an atomic bomb. Israel believes a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a threat to its very existence, citing Iranian leaders' frequent calls for destruction of the Jewish state, Iran's development of long-range missiles and Iranian support for Arab militant groups.

"Given the history of the Jewish people, I would not sit by and write off a threat by those who say they are going to annihilate us," Netanyahu told reporters. He said Arab nations, too, would be "relieved" if Iran were militarily prevented from obtaining nuclear arms.

Tehran has long insisted it is not developing atomic weapons. But French President Francois Hollande said Wednesday that Iran has not proven that its nuclear program is aimed only at civilian use.

Hollande has supported a push for tougher European Union sanctions on Iran, but he also wants to keep the door open to dialogue, and has opposed Netanyahu's talk of possible military action.

"It's a threat that cannot be accepted by France," Hollande said at Netanyahu's side, warning that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a danger to the region and the world.

France, Hollande said, "is ready to vote for other sanctions, as many as necessary."

"We must make sure that through pressure, sanctions and later through negotiations, Iran renounces its intention to have access to nuclear weapons. I am working in that spirit," he said.

Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran if it concludes that international sanctions and diplomacy are failing to halt the nuclear program. In a speech to the United Nations in September, Netanyahu suggested that the world had until next summer at the latest to act or it would be too late to prevent the Iranians from making a bomb.

In his comments Wednesday, Netanyahu said he hopes the issue will be resolved peacefully.

Netanyahu and Hollande also talked about the possibility of resuming Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations in Paris.

"President Hollande can invite (Palestinian President Mahmoud) Abbas to the Elysee," the French presidential palace, Netanyahu said. "I'm here, I'm ready. ... The only way we can complete the negotiations is to begin them."

Hollande responded: "That's a good idea."

The two leaders disagreed, however, about other issues.

France has long opposed Jewish settlement building in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, and supports the creation of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu says he also supports the idea of Palestinian independence, but he has added so many conditions that the Palestinians do not take his offers seriously.

France also voted for Palestinian membership in UNESCO, the Paris-based U.N. cultural and educational body, a year ago. The Palestinian president is now moving forward with his plan to seek upgraded observer status at the U.N. in New York next month, despite American and Israeli threats of financial or diplomatic retaliation.

Netanyahu criticized Palestinian efforts toward international recognition before a peace deal is reached, saying that "going to the U.N. with unilateral declarations is not negotiations. It's the opposite of negotiations."

Netanyahu's visit is the first to France under Hollande, a Socialist seen as somewhat less Israel-friendly than his conservative predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy.

It's also Netanyahu's first visit since a radical Islamist gunman killed a rabbi and three Jewish schoolchildren in southern France in March, this country's worst terrorist attack and worst anti-Semitic attack in years.

Netanyahu travels Thursday to Toulouse to pay homage to the victims.

Netanyahu's visit was marked by demonstrations by both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel activists. At one protest in front of Paris' Opera Garnier, about 200 supporters of the Palestinian cause waved banners and distributed leaflets calling for a boycott of Israel.

Youssef Berbero, a protester, called Netanyahu's visit "an insult to democracy and to the Palestinian people being massacred."

Smart as a bird: Flying rescue robot will autonomously avoid obstacles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Cornell researchers have created an autonomous flying robot that is as smart as a bird when it comes to maneuvering around obstacles.

Able to guide itself through forests, tunnels or damaged buildings, the machine could have tremendous value in search-and-rescue operations. Small flying machines are already common, and GPS technology provides guidance. Now, Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science, and his team are tackling the hard part: how to keep the vehicle from slamming into walls and tree branches. Human controllers can't always react swiftly enough, and radio signals may not reach everywhere the robot goes.

The test vehicle is a quadrotor, a commercially available flying machine about the size of a card table with four helicopter rotors. Saxena and his team have already programmed quadrotors to navigate hallways and stairwells using 3-D cameras. But in the wild, these cameras aren't accurate enough at large distances to plan a route around obstacles. So, Saxena is building on methods he previously developed to turn a flat video camera image into a 3-D model of the environment using such cues as converging straight lines, the apparent size of familiar objects and what objects are in front of or behind each other -- the same cues humans unconsciously use to supplement their stereoscopic vision.

Graduate students Ian Lenz and Mevlana Gemici trained the robot with 3-D pictures of such obstacles as tree branches, poles, fences and buildings; the robot's computer learns the characteristics all the images have in common, such as color, shape, texture and context -- a branch, for example, is attached to a tree. The resulting set of rules for deciding what is an obstacle is burned into a chip before the robot flies. In flight the robot breaks the current 3-D image of its environment into small chunks based on obvious boundaries, decides which ones are obstacles and computes a path through them as close as possible to the route it has been told to follow, constantly making adjustments as the view changes. It was tested in 53 autonomous flights in obstacle-rich environments -- including Cornell's Arts Quad -- succeeding in 51 cases, failing twice because of winds. The results were presented at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Portugal Oct. 7-12.

Saxena plans to improve the robot's ability to respond to environment variations such as winds, and enable it to detect and avoid moving objects, like real birds; for testing purposes, he suggests having people throw tennis balls at the flying vehicle.

The project is supported by a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Sprint rolls out new 4G tablet data plans November 11th, likely just in time for new(er) iPad, iPad mini

As a carrier trailing Verizon and AT&T in terms of subscribers and now 4G coverage, Sprint has made it a habit to undercut the other two on value. While its upcoming tablet-specific data plans won't necessarily be cheaper, they do promise up to 20 percent more data for the same price and still do not require a contract. Sure to come in handy now that it's offering the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini on its network, they are 300MB/$14.99, 3GB/$34.99, 6GB/$49.99, or 12GB for $79.99. There are also $10 and $15 offers for customers that also have Sprint smartphones that offer 100MB and 1GB of data, respectively, and activation fees for all 3G/4G tablets are being waived for a limited time. As you'll recall, Verizon and AT&T's offerings include 2GB/$30 (3GB/$30 on AT&T), 5GB/$50 and on Verizon, 10GB/$80 packages. Even if you're not an Apple user these plans apply for all 4G capable slates, with Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 specifically mentioned. For those planning to pick up one of the latest iPads with wifi + cellular capability however, their mid-November launch date may have narrowed slightly , since these plans go into effect November 11th. Check the press release after the break or a post on its Sprint Community blog for more info.

Chewing betel quid exposes half a billion people to direct carcinogens

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Chewing betel quid -- the fourth most popular psychoactive substance in the world after tobacco, alcohol and caffeine -- exposes its 600 million users to substances that act as direct carcinogens in the mouth, scientists are reporting in a new study. It appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

Mu-Rong Chao and Chiung-Wen Hu explain that betel quid (BQ) consists of nuts from the arcea tree, sometimes combined with spices, such as cardamom or saffron, and other ingredients. Available in commercial forms, BQ is popular among people in China, India and other Asian countries, and people of Asian heritage living in the U.S. and other countries. Scientists have known for decades that chewing BQ can lead to oral cancer, and showed recently that the substances in BQ could be changed into carcinogens in the body. The authors of this study explored whether there were any substances in the arcea nut that can cause cancer directly, without any need for the body to change or "activate" them.

They discovered that compounds in the arcea nut can "alkylate" the genetic material DNA, causing changes that increase the risk of cancer, and they are present in betel quid in amounts high enough to do so. "Our study showed that these alkylating agents are present at levels sufficient to cause DNA damage and could potentially have adverse implications to human health, particularly in the case of the development of oral cancer for BQ chewers," they say.

The authors acknowledge funding from the National Science Council, Taiwan.

Another Tibetan in western China self-immolates

BEIJING (AP) ? A Tibetan farmer set himself ablaze in front of a market in remote northwest China in the second self-immolation death near the Labrang Monastery in two days, a rights group said.

The monastery in Gansu province's Xiahe county is one of the most important outside of Tibet and was the site of numerous protests by monks following deadly ethnic riots in Tibet in 2008 that were the most sustained Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in decades.

The Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet said in an email that Dorje Rinchen, a farmer in his late 50s, set himself on fire Tuesday on the main street in Xiahe and died later.

The group sent a photo allegedly showing Dorje wrapped in blankets after the immolation, his neck and head badly charred and swollen. It was not clear whether he was still alive when the blurry, poorly lit picture was taken.

Two other photos obtained by the London-based Free Tibet group that appeared to be taken by someone on the sidewalk in front of Dorje show his body engulfed in flames. One shows him mid-sprint, his entire frame covered in flames except for one leg. The other shows him still in flames but lying face down on the paved street.

The International Campaign for Tibet quoted a Tibetan from Xiahe who currently lives in exile as saying that Dorje had counseled young Tibetans not to self-immolate.

Free Tibet said the self-immolation occurred in front of the Xiahe Public Security Bureau.

A woman who answered the phone at the Xiahe Public Security Bureau refused to answer questions about the self-immolation and the phone of the local Communist Party propaganda office rang unanswered Wednesday. The number for the Labrang Monastery appeared to not be in service.

On Monday, a Tibetan herdsman died after setting himself on fire near the monastery.

Dozens of Tibetans have set themselves on fire since March 2011 in ethnic Tibetan areas of China in protest over what activists say is Beijing's heavy-handed rule in the region. Many have called for the return of their spiritual leader, the exiled Dalai Lama. The government has confirmed some, but not all, of the self-immolations.

Chinese authorities routinely deny Tibetan claims of repression and have accused supporters of the Dalai Lama of encouraging the self-immolations. The Dalai Lama and representatives of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in India say they oppose all violence.

Revestor Announces National Release of Real Estate App ...

Editor's Note: ?Bill Lyons is the CEO & Founder of Revestor and 1996 Graduate of Coronado High School.

Revestor Announces National Release of Real Estate Application

?

Revestor recently announced their innovative real estate application has gone national. Revestor?s patent pending algorithms help consumers and investors make smarter buying decisions based on a home?s likely returns. Now, this application is available nationwide.

?

San Francisco, CA ? (Marketwire ? Oct 23, 2012) Revestor announced their unparalleled real estate technology, previously only available in select cities and metropolitan markets, is now available nationwide. Regardless of geographic location, consumers and investors can use Revestor?s technology in their home-buying process to estimate the risks involved with a home purchase and expectations for future potential performance of specific properties.

?

Historically, when consumers and investors searched for their next property to invest in, it has been a time-consuming process. Much research and thought goes into gathering reliable information to determine the locations and homes with the best opportunity for a long term positive return on investment. Revestor helps real estate professionals, investors and home buyers do this faster, from the convenience of their iPhone or home. Delivering key financial indicators in a geographic region, consumers and investors alike can make more informed buying decisions, helping their investment and purchase patterns.?

?

?We are thrilled to offer an application to the national market that actually changes the way people buy homes. It?s a whole new way of looking at real estate from a view most have never seen before. Zillow and Trulia are currently #1 and #2 in the space, with less than 2% of the market, leaving plenty of room for us to take our share? notes Revestor Founder and CEO, Bill Lyons.

?

?After all the hard work, it is an honor to finally be seen as a formidable competitor. We appreciate the praise and feedback to help us constantly improve and grow? says Revestor CIO, Boris Kaliman.

?

Like other popular real estate applications, Revestor provides a location-based search for properties. Setting them apart from the traditional 1D platforms, Revestor takes the process multidimensional. Using a unique algorithm, you can locate homes & investment properties, and estimate rents, potential cash flow and return on investment, making buyers better armed to assess potential risks associated with properties.

?

Home buyers can signup for free, and investors will have an opportunity to upgrade to a ?Premium Account? for a monthly subscription fee which provides advanced searching capabilities, along with more data and alerts. ?Investors will be able to enter their exact investment criteria and get an alert as soon as a property in their filters hits the market. This is a unique and powerful tool for the growing market of residential real estate investors who are purchasing 1million plus properties per year? says Lyons. Revestor will also earn revenue by going after the $8.9B/yr online real estate advertising market by offering advertising to real estate professionals, and unlike other sites, the ads will be ?behaviorally targeted? and are expected to provide a higher-quality lead to the advertiser.

?

The Revestor App, developed in partnership with EvolverMobile, is available through the iTunes store for iPhone and iPod Touch users as a free download. The company is working on future plans that include development for Android, iPad and Windows 8.

?

About Revestor: Revestor is a new real estate marketplace for consumers and investors to search homes for sale. With their patent pending technology, anyone buying real estate can search the unique application to find homes estimated to offer the best return. Users apply the information to make buying decisions that will benefit them in the long run, whether as a place to rent, live or invest in. For more information, visit http://www.revestor.com.

Android to beat Windows in 2016: Gartner

(Reuters) - Google's Android operating system will be used on more computing devices than Microsoft's Windows within four years, data from research firm Gartner showed on Wednesday, underlining the massive shift in the technology sector.

At the end of 2016, there will be 2.3 billion computers, tablets and smartphones using Android software, compared with 2.28 billion Windows devices, Gartner data showed.

That compares to an expected 1.5 billion Windows devices by the end of this year, against 608 million using Android.

Android, which reached the market only in 2008, has risen fast to be the dominant smartphone platform, controlling two-thirds of that market. It has taken the No. 2 spot in the fast-growing tablet computer market.

The proliferation of the free software gives Google its edge on the search market - its key profit generator.

Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell by over 8 percent in the third quarter, the steepest decline since 2001, as more consumers flock to increasingly powerful tablets and smartphones for more basic computing.

Microsoft's Windows has dominated the personal computer industry for decades, but the company has struggled to keep up with shift to wireless, and in smartphones its market share is around 3 percent.

New Apple iPad mini, 4thgeneration iPad reach the FCC

Apple's iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad didn't arrive alone. In the company's time-honored tradition, it has timed the FCC filings for both devices to show up alongside the products themselves. Each iOS tablet has been approved in both singular WiFi and dual cellular editions: the iPad mini has appeared as the WiFi-only A1432 as well as the A1454 and A1455 for worldwide HSPA+, EV-DO and LTE coverage, while the full-size iPad has been cleared in directly paralleled A1458, A1459 and A1460 versions. Not surprisingly, the frequency range matches that of the iPhone 5 and suggests that we're dealing with the same Qualcomm MDM9615 chip. We'll know more once the two iPads are in our hands and those of teardown artists, but for now you can explore Apple's regulatory gymnastics in full at the source links.

WinZip 17

It seems like WinZip has been around since the dawn of PC computing. And indeed, at 21, it's one of the few popular programs still in use to have attained drinking age. And by popular, I mean it recently passed the billion download mark. But the just-launched version 17 shows that you can teach old dogs new tricks, at least when it comes to software. WinZip 17 ($29.95 direct) plays a useful role in this day of cloud computing, social networks, Windows 8, mobile devices, and even graphics hardware acceleration. The program even has a modern, if not futuristic look, with a simple yet functional Office-style button ribbon.

As you may have guessed, it does a heck of a lot more than just zip and unzip files now. And it supports many more archive file formats, which you may run into when downloading on the Web. In addition to ZIP, it can handle TAR, GZIP, CAB, RAR, 7z, ARJ, LZH, BHZ, and many more. It also offers government-level encryption to protect your files, as well as the cloud and social-network integration mentioned. It can also create self-extracting ZIPs so that you're recipient doesn?t need a utility to extract included files.

Setup/Signup
WinZip, despite its name, is now available for not only Windows XP through 8, but also for Mac OS X, Android, and iOS. The non-Windows versions, however, don't get the full functionality of the Windows version. You can download WinZip 17 as a free 45-day trial version before you buy. The evaluation version displays a banner ad and dialog asking you to purchase whenever you fire up the program. Installation also adds an Outlook plugin, which actually generated errors when I used Outlook to send emails.

Interface
The new WinZip's main window has the look of recent Microsoft Office interfaces, with a ribbon control bar. You can, however, revert to the classic WinZip interface if you prefer. Either choice is far more useable and attractive than 7Zip's. You can even dress WinZip in themes, but there's no Wizard view as there used to be and like that still offered by WinRAR.

WinZip's first ribbon choice is Create, which offers options for encrypting, resizing photos, watermark, and even converting to PDF. A new button is a cloud with a down-pointing arrow, which lets you create zips from your Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft SkyDrive online storage. (Even though there's a Mac version of WinZip, it doesn't support iCloud file storage.) Of course, those choices required a sign-in to the cloud account. The Copy To ribbon set also offers those three cloud services as targets, too. I'd like to see Box (Free, 4 stars) added, since a lot of businesses use it.

Also like Office apps, at the very top of the app's window are small quick-access buttons, in WinZip's case these are for creating a new zip file, opening one, or?most interestingly?a cloud icon, which sends files to WinZip's ZipSend online storage service. More on this in a bit. WinZip also adds right-click choices to your Windows Explorer windows: You can create or add the selected files to an archive, or zip and e-mail the files. The context menus are also fully configurable, so you can just include the WinZip commands you want.

The remaining menu sets are Share, which lets you create a zip download on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. WinZip's own MyZip cloud storage is also an option here, as is FTP uploading. Backup, which lets you create a compressed Zip of everything in you Documents folder, photos, desktop, email, or favorites. This is a handy tool in a pinch.

Speaking of tools, that's the name of the next activity menu choice. Included are those for creating multi-part zip files, self-extracting ones, UUEncoding (remember those, from Usenet days?), and encrypting with a password. There are also tools for showing the last output messages of test results on the last zip action, a comment adder, and diagnostics. In my tests, the diagnostics and Last Output tools displayed the same dialog.

The final tool is the Performance Scan, which looks for unneeded and temporary files and registry issues, but when you click "Fix" it wants you to by the company's system cleaner software. Stick with CCleaner (Free, 3.5 stars) or SlimWare (Free, 4.5 stars) for this.

Cloud Connections
I was able to easily create zips from files that WinZip downloaded from my cloud accounts, and as with all zip creation in the program, a message box displayed after the operation, telling me how much space had been saved through compression. Likewise I could directly and easily upload a ZIP I'd just created to my cloud account.

Review: Airberlin Business Class

By David Armstrong

It takes 11 hours to fly nonstop from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Berlin?s Tegel Airport, and about 11 and a half hours to return to LAX against prevailing winds. That?s a long time to be airborne, so of course being comfortable counts.

Until it completes taking delivery of 18 Boeing 787-8s it has on order (and potentially five more, which it has optioned), Airberlin?s primary long-haul fleet type is the Airbus A330-200

?

Airberlin (IATA code AB) proved to be just the ticket when I flew in Business Class from Los Angeles to Berlin and back on a business trip in the first week of October.

It was my first trip on Airberlin. Founded in 1979 with hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf, it is the second-largest airline in Germany.

Airberlin ? the airline styles its name as airberlin ? made a very good first impression on this frequent flier in spite of the inconveniences of using woefully overcrowded Berlin-Tegel Airport (IATA code TXL).

Tegel is scheduled for demolition when the oft-delayed Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (IATA code BER) finally opens next to Sch?nefeld Airport, which will be shut down. The fourth and latest opening date is October 27, 2013.

This photograph shows a line-up of four of Airberlin?s Airbus A330s at one of its major hubs, either Berlin or Dusseldorf

?

Until then, Airberlin will have to make do with Tegel, in circumstances beyond its control. Among them are sharing a small, nondescript passenger lounge in Terminal B with oneworld partner British Airways, and using functional but no-frills Terminal C for some flights.

Airberlin will have a major presence at Berlin Brandenburg when it opens next year. In the meantime, some travelers might be tempted to book away from Airberlin, but that would be a mistake.

It is a well-run, passenger-friendly, forward-looking airline, known in Europe for affordable fares, though it does not bill itself as a low-cost carrier.

Airberlin flies to seven U.S. destinations: New York JFK, Chicago O?Hare (from March 2013), Fort Myers in Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, and, in summer, San Francisco.

Air Berlin began three-times weekly service between Berlin and Los Angeles on May 11, 2012, using Airbus A330-200s. The carrier?s inaugural Berlin-Los Angeles flight was met at Los Angeles International Airport with a traditional water-cannon salute from airport fire-department vehicles

?

Like everyone, I like creature comforts while flying on long-haul routes, and Airberlin is not short of those in the areas it controls directly: passenger seats, food and drink, in-flight entertainment, the quality of its fleet, interior cabin design.

Most important, though, is the caliber of staff, and here Airberlin excels. It showcased witty, personable and smart cabin crews on both my transatlantic flights.

Thanks mainly to the engaging, can-do attitude of staff, Airberlin plays a role vis-?-vis its major rival, Lufthansa, roughly analogous to the role Virgin Atlantic Airways plays vis-?-vis BA: that of a smaller, younger, rising airline taking on a much-larger, long-established ? and high-quality ? flag carrier.

(Editor?s note: Airberlin is, however, a much larger airline than is Virgin Atlantic Airways. In addition to Airberlin?s long-haul network, it has a major short-to-medium-haul network and a large fleet of single-aisle aircraft, whereas Virgin Atlantic has virtually no short-haul operations.)

The flight attendants on our reviewer?s long-haul flights in Business Class on Airberlin were witty, personable and smart

?

I wasn?t able to use Web check-in, as www.airberlin.com doesn?t allow online check-in for flights to and from the United States, but my airport check-in at LAX went smoothly. Business Class passengers can check-in two bags, each weighing up to 32 kilograms (70.5 pounds), free of charge.

My departing flight began in the Business Class lounge that Airberlin shares in LAX?s Tom Bradley International Terminal with oneworld partner Qantas Airways. The Aussie carrier operates one of the best passenger departure lounges I?ve seen in a U.S. airport.

Located past security and up several levels, the lounge is spacious, nicely lit and well-laid out in a linear fashion with each defined area dedicated to a different activity: eating, drinking, beavering away on a laptop, reading, watching TV, or sitting in a silent zone.

I was not traveling with a personal electronic device, so I especially appreciated that the Qantas/oneworld lounge offered no fewer than 19 free desktop PCs for the use of travelers.

In addition to large fleets of Airbus A320-family jets and Boeing 737NGs, Airberlin operates 13 Airbus A330-200 widebodies and two A330-300s. This photograph, taken at sunset, shows one of the carrier?s A330-200s landing

?

Airberlin flight AB 7023 took off on time. Glasses of complimentary champagne helped make take-off a jolly experience.

The two-class Airbus A330-200 had 20 Business Class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, giving the cabin a cozy feel. Four flight attendants worked the space, imparting a cared-for quality. There were an additional 279 seats in Economy Class.

Airberlin does not rank among the industry?s innovators in seat technology but my Business Class seat proved more than adequate. The leather seats are 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) wide, 181 centimeters (72 inches) long and recline 170 degrees, backed with a hard shell. Seat pitch is 137 centimeters (53.9 inches).

A wide metal arm separates passengers in window and aisle seats. A personal, high-resolution, 8.9-inch touch screen offering games, movies, TV, music and a map showing progress of the aircraft pops out of the armrest and slides back. The meal table folds out of the top of the armrest. There is also a power socket for laptops.

These are what the Business Class seats look like on Airberlin?s Airbus A330-200s

?

Dinner was served shortly after takeoff on my 5:45 p.m. flight. In addition to its regular wine list, Air Berlin offers a small selection of wines from the restaurant Sansibar on the German island of Sylt in the North Sea.

I sipped one, a 2011 Kaapzicht Anna White, a refreshing South African blend of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, from the Stellenbosch wine region in the Cape Winelands. The young wine went well with my green salad with grilled potatoes, mixed vegetables and wedges of hardboiled egg.

For an entr?e, I had well-done ? but not over-done ? beef brisket in peppercorn sauce, with potato noodles and roasted carrots. I matched that with a 2006 Vincola Requense Polacio Crianza, a robust red wine from Spain, adroitly blended from Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon.

After dining, I read for a time, then slipped on high-quality Air Berlin headphones and listened to a mix of old favorites ? Dylan, Springsteen, the Who, the Kinks? ?Village Green Preservation Society? ? and new favorites Lady Gaga and the powerhouse British soul-singer Joss Stone.

In its long-haul Business Class cabins, Air Berlin offers food and wines from the restaurant Sansibar on the German island of Sylt in the North Sea. The wine choices from Sansibar are in addition to the airline?s main wine list

?

There are some 200 hours of entertainment programming on board in Business Class. The monitor includes a USB port. I snoozed for an hour or so, though legroom when the seat reclined was not abundant, until our on-time arrival.

Eight days later, on my return flight, AB 7022, I noticed the little things, nearly all of them done right. I dug into the amenity kit for ear plugs and an eyeshade and dabbed on the L?Occitane lip balm and face cream. I slipped on the black, Asian-style slippers, so much more comfortable than thin airplane socks worn by themselves.

I admired the smart flight attendant uniforms ? black, with red belts for the men and red scarves for the women. I was asked four times on the long return journey if I wanted to nosh or imbibe. I didn?t but I appreciated the non-intrusive solicitude of the staff.

The uniforms of Airberlin?s flight crews and cabin attendants are smart and stylish

?

Just before touch-down, a flight attendant asked, ?Mr. Armstrong, do you have a connecting flight??

?I do,? I said.

?Here is a bottle of water for the flight,? he said.

Little things mean a lot.

Tigers rout Yankees 8-1 for 4-game ALCS sweep

DETROIT (AP) ? Phil Coke stormed into Jim Leyland's office and sprayed the veteran manager with some of Detroit's celebratory bubbly.

When Leyland tried to take cover in a bathroom, Coke chased him ? a fitting scene involving an unsung reliever whose role changed with little warning and a skipper who never stopped believing in his team.

"I just reminded everybody when we took our punches all year, 'You know what? Let's just wait till the end, and then if we have underachieved, I will be the first one to admit it,'" Leyland said. "So hopefully we've quieted some doubters now. The guys just stepped it up when we had to."

Leyland and the Tigers are heading to the World Series now. Max Scherzer capped a stupendous stretch for Detroit's rotation, and the Tigers won their second pennant in seven years by beating the New York Yankees 8-1 Thursday for a four-game sweep of the AL championship series.

Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta hit two-run homers in a four-run fourth inning against CC Sabathia, who was unable to prevent the Yankees from getting swept in a postseason series for the first time in 32 years.

Without a World Series title since 1984, Detroit lost to Texas in last year's ALCS, lost slugger Victor Martinez to a season-ending knee injury in January and quickly replaced his offense by signing Prince Fielder. The excitement of that bold acquisition subsided a bit when the Tigers struggled to a 26-32 start in the AL Central, but they overtook the Chicago White Sox in the final 10 days of the regular season and won the division with an 88-74 record, matching the Cardinals for the fewest wins among the 10 playoff teams.

Through it all, Leyland kept an even keel. There was urgency in the Detroit clubhouse, but never panic. The closest the manager came to a major change of course was when closer Jose Valverde gave up four runs in the ninth inning of Game 1 against the Yankees.

Detroit won that game anyway, and Coke got the save in Games 2 and 3 in Valverde's place. Coke also was on the mound at the end of the finale.

"It's been really fun," Coke said. "It's been a blast. I couldn't ask for a better opportunity than have us going to the World Series, have a chance to participate and do the best job I can for the team."

Contrast that to the Yankees, who changed lineups drastically throughout the playoffs in a futile attempt to jump-start an anemic offense.

After scoring in just three of 39 innings during the series, New York headed home to face unpleasant questions about its future following a postseason of awful hitting, benched stars and veterans showing the wear and tear of age. Alex Rodriguez, the $275 million third baseman, was out of the starting lineup Thursday for the third time in the playoffs. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera could only watch following season-ending injuries.

Rodriguez at least played Thursday, flying out with two on in the sixth as a pinch hitter and grounding out in the ninth.

"Baseball's not an easy game," Rodriguez said. "You wish you could go out and, again, hit .400 and hit the ball all over the park and hit home runs but the one thing that I'm proud of is just kept coming out, working hard, battling, never gave up. And we win as a team, we lose as a team."

The game ended with Fielder, Detroit's $214 million acquisition, catching Jayson Nix's popup. The Tigers spilled onto the field for a celebration that began near second base and eventually moved closer to the third-base line.

General manager Dave Dombrowski hugged Leyland ? who is in the final year of his contract ? while owner Mike Ilitch rubbed the 67-year-old manager's right shoulder.

"I've got a great bunch. We don't have one hot dog in the bunch," Ilitch said. "They're all great guys. ... The Tigers are something special."

Detroit won its 11th American League pennant and first since 2006. The Tigers have five days off before the World Series starts Wednesday at defending champion St. Louis or 2010 winner San Francisco.

The Yankees, with a big league-high $222 million payroll, hit .188 in the postseason ? a record low for a team that played at least seven games ? and .157 in the LCS. New York went quietly in the ninth inning, with the Comerica Park crowd chanting "Sweep!" while the last three batters were retired in order.

In the postseason, Detroit's rotation has been impeccable. Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Doug Fister allowed only two earned runs against the Yankees. New York was shut out once and totaled six runs in the series.

"We all know what's at stake, we all know every single game's different, we need to go out there and pitch our best," Scherzer said. "When we do that, that's when we give the team a chance to win."

Scherzer allowed a run and two hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out 10 and walked two.

The Yankees, without a World Series title since 2009, lost Jeter to a broken ankle in the opening game, and the slumping Rodriguez was benched for Game 3. He was out of the starting lineup for Game 4 too, but A-Rod did have one last chance to turn his postseason around when Scherzer was lifted for left-hander Drew Smyly with two outs in the sixth and the Tigers up 6-1.

As Smyly finished warming up, Rodriguez popped out of the dugout to hit for Raul Ibanez, but with runners at the corners, he hit a routine fly to center field. His groundout in the ninth capped a 3-for-25 (.125) playoffs with no RBIs.

New York owes the 37-year-old Rodriguez $114 million over the next five years. His contract includes a provision that requires he approve trades, and he wants to stay.

"I love New York City and I love everything about being a Yankee," he said. "The highs are very high and the lows are extremely low."

The Yankees failed to win a game in a postseason series for only the fifth time. They hadn't been swept since a best-of-five ALCS against Kansas City in 1980. The last team to sweep four straight against them had been Cincinnati in the 1976 World Series.

After a rainout Wednesday, Game 4 started under a sunny sky, and Detroit immediately took the lead on series MVP Delmon Young's RBI single in the first. Young became the first player with four game-winning RBIs in one postseason series, according to STATS, LLC.

About the only thing the Yankees had done well in this postseason was pitch, and Sabathia failed to keep that going. He didn't have much help from his defense. Mark Teixeira, a four-time Gold Glove winner at first base, misplayed two grounders in the third ? one for an infield hit and one for an error.

New York's hitting was abysmal throughout the playoffs. Robinson Cano was at .075 (3 for 40) with no home runs, including a 29 at-bat hitless streak. Curtis Granderson was 3 for 30 with 16 strikeouts, Nick Swisher hit .167 (5 for 30) with two RBIs, Russell Martin hit .161 (5 for 31) with one RBI and Eric Chavez finished 0 for 16 with eight strikeouts.

"It wasn't one guy. It wasn't two guys," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It was a bunch of guys."

NOTES: Cabrera has a hit in a record 17 straight LCS games. He's reached base in all 20 of his postseason games with the Tigers, a team record. ... Sabathia was 4-0 in his previous eight postseason starts. ... Thursday was the 35th anniversary of Reggie Jackson's three-homer game for the Yankees in the World Series against the Dodgers. ... New York scored seven runs at Baltimore in the division series opener, then was held to four or fewer in the next eight games. The Yankees' longest previous stretch like that in postseason play came in 2001, when they were held to four or fewer runs in all seven games of the World Series by Arizona.
