NKorea speculation overshadows SKorean rocket

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea on Thursday scrapped an attempt to fire its first satellite into orbit from its own soil amid speculation that North Korea was preparing to fire its own long-range rocket.

Scientists in South Korea cited technical problems with the rocket's flight control system. It's the second time in a month that Seoul has been forced to cancel a launch at the last minute as it attempts to join an elite group of nations that have launched satellites from their own land.

But it is North Korea's rocket program that has raised worry in recent days. Two South Korean officials said Thursday that there are signs of preparations at a North Korean rocket site on the northwest coast. They declined to be named because of office rules preventing them from speaking publicly of intelligence matters.

A North Korean long-range rocket broke apart shortly after liftoff in April, but the attempt drew United Nations condemnation and worsened already tense relations between the Koreas.

Washington and Seoul say Pyongyang uses such rocket launches to develop missiles that could target the United States. Technology employed in scientific rocket launches can be easily converted into use for missiles.

North Korea says its launch attempts are part of a peaceful space program and are meant to put satellites into orbit.

Any North Korean launch in the next several weeks would be seen in Seoul as an attempt to influence South Korea's Dec. 19 presidential election.

South Korea failed in its two previous rocket launches from its own soil in 2009 and 2010. South Korea has launched domestically-made satellites aboard foreign-made rockets from other countries since 1992.

South Korea's 142-ton Naro's first stage is built by Russia. Its South Korean-made second stage is meant to release a scientific satellite once it reaches orbit.

Yankee PR Counsels Central Jersey NARI Members To Consider ...

?

Fred Feiner, President of Yankee Public Relations of Pittstown, N.J.

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 29, 2012 - PITTSTOWN, N.J. ? Yankee Public Relations President Fred Feiner addressed a recent meeting of the Central Jersey Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and asked members, ?Are you marketing too much??

?Small business marketing is all about being selective and being sure you are measuring Return on Investment (ROI),? said Feiner, an Alexandria Township resident with more than 25 years of communications experience. ?Small business owners are wearing many hats and marketing can be so overwhelming that some literally don?t know how much money they are spending, what kind of ROI they are getting or even how much is in their marketing budget. It?s a recipe for small business failure.?

Central Jersey NARI President Patrick Chrustinsky, a Bridgewater resident, asked Feiner to provide the group with an overview of small business marketing because of the challenging market facing businesses in construction and remodeling.

?It?s important to keep your marketing focused and consistent with your strategy and approach,? said Chrustinsky, who owns Perfect Connections Security Systems of Somerville. ?Fred has extensive experience in our industry so he brought a valuable perspective. There are so many marketing choices out there today, it?s easy to become scattered and ineffective.?

Feiner emphasized with the group that it is important to have a marketing plan, even if their marketing resources are minimal.

?Business owners need to have something on paper that measures their goals so they can hold themselves and vendors accountable,? said Feiner. ?Make it a 90-day plan, six-months or a year ? whatever you are comfortable with ? but force yourself to revisit it at least every 90 days. Be realistic with your goals and expectations; choose to execute a few strategies well rather than trying to do everything and having a poor result.?

Some of the suggestions Feiner offered attendees included:

? Be flexible. Be open-minded. Constantly look for new ways to influence your target market. Even if you are extremely successful, don?t be afraid to try something new and different.

? Be an expert. Be the person that people talk about when they need your expertise. Give presentations, write articles, publish press releases and take leadership roles in professional organizations.

? Get social. Love it or hate it, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are here to stay. The key to social media success is building a following. Actively educate your online community about your industry and expertise to gain exposure.

? Get traffic. Online advertising is not an option; it?s a necessity. If you want to be on page 1 of Google, you need to be utilizing Google Ad Words. Drive traffic to your website, which should be updated regularly.

?Small businesses need to recognize that marketing is an investment in their future,? said Feiner. ?Market your business even when you don?t really need the business, because you are planting seeds that will grow in the future. But if your marketing task list continues to grow and you can?t trace results to the bottom line, it?s probably time to consider a new approach.?

Korean pop rides "Gangnam Style" into U.S. music scene

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Gangnam Style," the catchy Korean song by rapper Psy, may have danced its way into the American charts but the Korean pop industry isn't horsing around when it comes to capitalizing on the singer's phenomenal U.S. success.

With "Gangnam Style" topping the current Billboard Digital Songs chart and becoming the most-watched video on YouTube ever with more than 800 million views, fellow Korean pop, or K-pop, artists are positioning themselves for similar U.S. breakthroughs.

Korea's pop music industry is thriving. Over the past two years, a handful of K-pop acts including girl group 2NE1, boy band Super Junior and nine-piece band Girls Generation have embarked on mini-promotional tours around the United States to build their audience.

"Psy has opened doors and is shining a spotlight on K-pop. People are paying attention to what's being done there," Alina Moffat, general manager at YG Entertainment group, which manages Psy, told a recent entertainment industry conference in Los Angeles.

Psy's vibrant music video, featuring his invisible pony-riding dance, also featured K-pop artists Kim Hyun-a of girl band 4Minute, and Deasung and Seungri of boy band Big Bang, all of whom are attempting to crack the U.S. market.

"YouTube has really changed the awareness of K-pop. Both American kids and second-generation Korean American kids are discovering it," Kye Kyoungbon Koo, director of the Korea Creative Content Agency, told a panel at a Billboard and Hollywood Reporter conference in Los Angeles in October.

MARKETING THE NEXT BIG THING

For U.S. companies looking to invest, K-pop is being marketed as the next big thing, boasting young, stylish and influential artists who command devoted fan followings.

Moffat said car companies and mobile phone brands were among those being courted at KCON, a convention held in October in Irvine in Southern California that showcased K-pop artists.

"Kids are coming, they're engaged, they want to spend money and sponsors saw that," Moffat said.

Whether Psy or other K-pop artists can command a global following to rival Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber or Rihanna remains to be seen, but John Shim, senior producer at MTV World, believes it is the right genre to compete with pop music's biggest names.

"K-pop admittedly is a very niche genre but I also think it's the best equipped of Asian pop to cater to the U.S. audience," Shim told Reuters.

Psy has helped to break down language barriers, keeping "Gangnam Style" in its original Korean form instead of adapting it to English when it became an international hit.

The singer told Reuters he was persuaded to keep it that way by his manager Scooter Braun, the talent scout responsible for Justin Bieber's success, who signed Psy to his record label.

"I thought, 'Should I translate this or not?' because (the fans) have got to know what I'm talking about, and lyrics are a huge part," Psy said.

CHATTING IN ENGLISH

But industry executives say at least one member of each K-Pop group is usually taught to be fluent in conversational English.

"The investment in language is costly, but effective," said Ted Kim, president of South Korean music television channel Mnet. "It really matters that Psy can go on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show and have a conversation."

Psy said he was proud his song succeeded in Korean, but he now wants to branch out into English.

"'Gangnam Style' is not the sort of thing that's going to happen twice. I've definitely got to make something in English so I can communicate with my fans right now," the singer said.

In Korea, bands such as SM Entertainment's Super Junior and Girls Generation have became branding powerhouses, scoring endorsements ranging from cosmetics, fashion, video games, electronics and beverages.

In the United States, companies such as Samsung have already jumped on the K-pop train, sponsoring Korean boy band Big Bang's U.S. tour.

But while the genre is gaining steam in the charts, it has yet to spill into ticket sales for tours, according to Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief at Pollstar.com, which tracks concert sales.

"Psy may be able to sell out arenas in Asia, but not yet here. For the American audience, he has to prove that he's more than a novelty act," Bongiovanni said.

"K-pop has to prove itself before large companies spend money on it," he added.

Online personal training startup Wello packs a punch with $1 million ...

Wello

Some impressive investors including Mayo Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Mohr Davidow and Aberdare Ventures have thrown $1 million in seed money behind an ambitious Rock Health fitness startup by the name of Wello.

The startup has created an online marketplace that connects physical trainers with clients and enables live, online personal training via video chat.

The seed round, which also saw contributions from Morado Ventures, S-Cubed Capital, PhilQuo Ventures and angel investors, will propel the startup as it readies to launch a new offering early next year.

Right now, Wello facilitates personalized, one-on-one training sessions between consumers and more than 150 certified physical trainers. The next step is to launch fitness classes led by those trainers so that users can do joint sessions with family or friends in different places, or join a structured class with others who are interested in the same activity and are available at the same time. That would bring down the cost of a session, co-founder Leslie Silverglide noted, which ranges from $35 to $199 per hour depending on the trainer.

For consumers, the value proposition is obvious: more motivation to work out and help from someone who knows what they?re doing, without having to leave home. The site lets users search for trainers based on style and specialty. For trainers, Wello provides an additional revenue stream and the potential to fill typically unbooked hours during the day with appointments. Trainers are screened by the company?s on-staff personal trainer and must take a class on how to train through video.

Wello takes a part of the per-session payment, but not nearly as much as the up-to-80 percent that gyms take from trainers? fees, Silverglide said. That enables trainers to charge less for a session.

Silverglide and co-founder Ann Scott Plante met as business students at Stanford University and started working on the site at the beginning of 2011. They launched it in a private beta mode in March of this year and publicly in July.

They won?t say just how many people are using the site, but they will say that those that use it tend to return. ?Two-thirds of people that try a session once will come on and try it again,? Plante said, adding that some customers have already done up to 50 sessions in the four months the site has been live.

As far as competition goes, the closest thing to Wello appears to be HealthFleet Inc., a Connecticut e-coaching startup for weight loss. But Wello is probably tapping into the same pool of people who would use services or mobile tools that track and personalize health recommendations like FitKit, Healthrageous and Enforcer eCoaching.

Although the founders are spending their time in Rock Health?s incubator program developing and preparing to launch the new features next year, they aren?t planning on stopping there. ?Ultimately we hope to connect people with experts in nutrition, sports therapy, etc.,? Silverglide said.

Small Business Saturday boosts some local shops | small, saturday ...

Sales at World of Wigs in Santa Ana soared 500 percent on Small Business Saturday, compared with a typical Saturday. And Toy Boat, Toy Boat, Toy Boat, a Corona del Mar toy store, tripled its sales from the post-Thanksgiving sales event in 2011.

American Express started promoting Small Business Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday in 2010 to encourage shoppers to support their local merchants. This year, the credit card giant offered signs, door mats and $25 gift cards that participating merchants could give away and credit that its cardholders could receive on their next bill by shopping at qualified small businesses.

American Express reported Monday that about 500,000 small businesses nationwide participated this year. The company has not yet said how many consumers shopped locally on Saturday compared with the 103 million who spent money at small businesses during the 2011 Small Business Saturday.

But anecdotally, the day was a success for some Orange County merchants who had special activities and sales on Saturday.

?It was fabulous, one of best Saturdays we've had,? said Susan Upton, owner of Lolo Boutique in Fullerton, who offered a sparkling wine reception Saturday. ?Sales were twice what they were last year. It was fun; the people were nice and excited about what we had to show.?

The combination of Fullerton Chamber of Commerce support and American Express promotions brought more attention to Small Business Saturday, Upton said, adding that the boutique's patrons also filled two baskets with toys for dogs in animal shelters for its ongoing Santa Paws campaign.

Toy Boat owner Lori Curtin said, ?Our Small Business Saturday promotion went great! People from all over Southern California came in.?

A pre-event American Express commercial featured Toy Boat, and on Saturday KNX/1070 AM interviewed Curtin in a news report. ?That was a surprise blessing,? she said Monday.

The shop offered free food and children's arts and crafts projects. ?We also collected a half box of Toys for Tots,? Curtin said. ?We gave customers who contributed to that fundraiser an extra 15 percent discount. It was a heart-warming day.?

Rhonda Thaut of World of Wigs said the store had not had much business on past Small Business Saturdays, so owners decided to reach out to customers to spread information to boost sales. The wig shop offered door prizes, snacks, gifts and hourly flash sales. Customers responded this year as never before.

?People would call in and ask, ?What's on sale now?'? Thaut said. ?It was so surprising. We had half off everything in the store one hour; buy one, get one free another hour. And some of our wigs sell for $3,000, so those were good offers.

?We had so much fun,? she said. ?We had Halloween wigs on clearance, and we even had a couple of Santas come in and buy wigs. Some post-surgery patients said they didn't realize they could refreshen their wigs. They were grateful to get information they couldn't get from the hospital.?

Laguna Beach Books offered half off selected art books on Small Business Saturday, and owner Jane Hanauer said, ?We had a ton of customers, many visitors as well as regular customers. I haven't compared it to a year ago yet.?

The OC Mart Mix, a collection of small, owner-operated businesses, was especially busy, said spokeswoman Allison Olmstead. ?What we found is that Small Business Saturday supporters aren't the early-morning shoppers like Black Friday shoppers, but they are the most thankful and kind group of shoppers out there. They were so supportive and thrilled to be helping the small, owner-operated businesses at the Mix.?

Those entrepreneurs included Sarah Dowdell, owner of Deer Lovely and Whiskey Tango 1977. ?We more than doubled our numbers from last year,? Dowdell said. ?We saw a lot of families and people spend the day with us thanks to the holiday activities, the music, and the photo booth at the OC Mart Mix and the SoCo Farmers' Market.?

Another was Alex Forsythe, owner of Analog. ?Having a day to support small businesses is like a dream come true when you are in your first year of business. So it was great to see so many people come out to support us,? he said.

Jayson Hanson, owner of Stoned Jewelry added, ?It was one of our biggest days this year. It was busy all day. It felt like the economy was back. The Small Business Saturday momentum kept going through Sunday.?

Portola Coffee Lab and Theorem had lines of customers out the door from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, said manager Jeff Clinard. ?We took that time to connect with our customers, answer questions about our brewing methods and even employed a hand-held device so we could ring up customers who also wanted to buy coffee beans and gift cards while standing in line.?

Tablets 2012: Even with competition, iPad hangs onto crown

19 hrs.

Non-iPads from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and others are flooding the market, bringing more diverse experiences, often at better prices than the iPad and its little sibling, the iPad Mini.

Doesn?t matter. Odds are, you?ll still ask Santa for an Apple tablet. And new research suggests Apple iPads large and small will dominate this rapidly growing business, at least through 2013.

OK OK, you're thinking, "Thanks for the newsflash, fanboy." But seriously, in a universe where shoppers operate on cold logic and ever-tightening budgets, the iPad should fall under the wheels of Android any minute now, the same thing that happened with smartphones. So how does Apple maintain its grip?

It's not design or ease of use. Although they surely contribute to customer loyalty, they're not enormous differentiators any more. (Don?t believe me? Ask Apple?s patent lawyers.)

So what?s the answer? Tablets aren?t smartphones and they?re not PCs. While the Android camp waited for a bounce?from the successful phone business, and Microsoft and the computer vendors groped for a bridge between PCs and tablets, Apple made this middle ground the iPad's kingdom.

Heated competition
In the fall of 2011, when Amazon and Barnes & Noble axed their tablet prices down to under $200, Apple held its $499 starting point.

Logic suggested that the iPad would lose its lead, or at least, its majority. The non-Apple upstarts did see spikes in shipments over the 2011 holiday quarter, according to NPD DisplaySearch, a top global research firm. But by mid-2012, Apple was once again shipping over two thirds of the world?s tablets.

This fall, the non-iPads redoubled their attack. Asus and Samsung teamed up with Google to create Nexus-branded 7-inch and 10-inch tablets (respectively). Amazon multiplied its Kindle Fire by three, and dropped the entry-level 7-inch tablet's price down to $159. Barnes & Noble launched a video service and put out a 9-inch tablet at the unheard-of price of $269.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, the sleeping giant, finally addressed the bite iPad is taking out of PC sales by launching its own tablet. Or is it a PC? Whatever it is ? and believe me, the debate still rages ? the $499 Surface RT with its clever keyboard add-on and its full version of Microsoft Office was built to challenge the notion that an iPad can satisfy most computerly needs.

Apple's response to the increased competition made sense ... sort of. It jacked up the specs on its flagship 9.7-inch tablet, and addressed the growing interest in 7-inch tablets by popping out the iPad Mini, a 7.9-inch model. But Apple priced the Mini at $329 ? well above devices from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google. And the screen on the Mini doesn't measure up, resolution-wise, to those same cheaper competitors.

Again, doesn?t matter.

Apple ? or at least, the 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch displays unique to Apple ? will account for two thirds of tablets shipped through 2013, according to a forecast from NPD DisplaySearch, which uses research from over 140 display component manufacturers around the globe.

A recent study from Nielsen tells a similar story, at least for kids writing letters to Santa. Nearly half of surveyed U.S. kids between the ages of 6 and 12 want an iPad, and 36 percent want an iPad Mini. Even respondents age 13 and up said the iPad was No. 1. (While a ?Tablet computer other than iPad? also rated relatively highly, the only specific non-iPad to reach double-digit demand in either survey was the Kindle Fire.)

What tablets aren?t
Unlike smartphones, there is no inherent reason to buy a tablet. (Don?t kid yourself.) People must rationalize their $499 iPad purchase, and here's how they do it: "We just need something to use in the family room and kitchen," or "We just need something to take on trips," or "We just need an extra computer for the kids."

Most if not all tablet households already have a PC, so people don't need to use an iPad to set up their routers, archive their photos or whatever else a full-blown PC might be especially good for. What an iPad does is fulfill the needs of a secondary computer, without the hassle.

While tablets can replace PCs, they aren't PCs, and thank God for that.

Even in the business world, this PC replacement is gaining momentum. This past week, Barclays Bank made news by buying 8,500 iPads for use in branches, what is being called the biggest purchase of the tablets by a financial services firm.

"On the business side ??and on the consumer side ? it's about the apps,? says Paul Semenza, senior vice president of?analyst services for NPD?DisplaySearch, whose firm has identified that tablets are eating into PC sales. Enterprise-focused apps by the likes of Salesforce, Cisco and Oracle mean that an iPad can provide a convenient way to do highly specialized work quickly on a touchscreen, "rather than having to crack open the notebook."

In confirming the iPad as ?winner and still champ,? Consumer Reports? Jeffrey Fox also cites apps: "With dozens of Android-based models nipping at its heels, the iPad managed to not only hold its own, but up the ante for performance. When you add to that the breadth and quality of its apps, the iPad is still the tablet to beat."

Apple?s commanding lead in tablet-friendly apps ? over 275,000 built specifically for the iPad?s larger screens, versus the underwhelming handful?of tablet-specific apps?available in the?Google Play store ? helps keep it on top. A key reason for the App Store?s initial success is that Apple has its customers trained to spend money, something Google has never really been able to do. When developers release iPad apps, they expect to get paid by the download; to spend time and money bringing the same app to another platform, they must first calculate the risks and rewards.

This can be a vicious circle: If nobody's paying for Android tablet?apps, new ones won't be quick to show up, and then nobody will buy the tablets ... because of a lack of apps. Google has revamped its Google Play store, combining apps with movies and music, in?the hope that at least some customers would?start paying for some content.

Engage!
But there's more to it than just numbers: There?s increasing evidence that iOS users are far more engaged than Android users. NetMarketShare data reported in Fortune last June say that the share of mobile Internet usage for iOS had reached 62 percent, while the far greater population of Android devices hadn?t quite reached 20 percent.

A fresh study by IBM takes it further: Nearly 10 percent of all online shopping over Black Friday was done on iPads, beating "any other tablet or smartphone," says the tech firm. iPhones made up 8.7 percent, while Android was down at 5.5 percent. The so-called ?iPad Factor? is even more pronounced when compared to other tablets: It represented 88.3 percent of tablet online shopping, followed by the Barnes & Noble Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent, says IBM's press release.

And that's why makers of Android tablets should be afraid, because when it comes to tablets, the desire for engagement must precede the tablet purchase.

Amazon and Barnes & Noble have had more luck than other non-Apple tablets in grabbing market share, at least in short bursts, because their tablets come with a built-in sales argument: Buy this to enjoy books and videos to your heart's content.

Amazon has the added advantage of customers who spend so frequently that they keep their credit cards on file, and enough revenues that it can sell tablets at cost, hoping to see profits through media sales.

But while the $70-per-year Amazon Prime video service is nice, its library is not as nice as the omnipresent Netflix's, and the service itself has a large base of customers who signed up for shipping perks, not streaming TV shows.

Most importantly, Amazon makes most of its digital products available on competing iPads, too. The customer's dilemma becomes: "Do I go cheap and get an Amazon-focused experience? Or do I spend more for a broader platform that includes Amazon's services and a lot more?" Apple may push its own services pretty hard, but the flowering of the App Store means that the iPad has become a crossroads of Internet experiences.

All of these factors mean that the iPad,?this expensive-ish not-quite-a-PC that was laughed at when it launched in 2010,?will hold onto its crown for the foreseeable future, as alternatives continue to scramble for relevance. In the smartphone world, someone shopping for an iPhone may well settle for a cheaper Android phone. Yet when it comes to tablets, someone who decides not to buy an iPad may simply choose nothing at all.

Food Network Kitchen eatery opens at Fla. airport

1 day

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --?The Food Network is getting into the restaurant business in a location not always associated with good food: An airport.

The channel has opened its first Food Network Kitchen at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in South Florida in the JetBlue terminal.

"The dynamic of food and travel has changed," said Sergei Kuharsky, general manager of Food Network's new business enterprises. "You used to never go in and think about eating at an airport."

Now, with passengers arriving early to get through security and limited options for in-flight food, there's a market for airport dining. "We are responding to that opportunity," Kuharsky said.

The Food Network Kitchen is the only eatery serving hot food at the JetBlue concourse. But it's the brand that gets attention from travelers as much as the lack of alternatives.

"I walked by and I said 'Oh wow, look at that. Food Network restaurant.' So I came in," said Richard Wierzbicki of Austin, Texas. "And I would look for it again because I thought the sandwich was really good."

Since opening Nov. 8, the Food Network Kitchen has averaged 1,500 customers a day.

"Airport locations are very busy, but this one especially," said Jean-Pierre Turgot, general manager for Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services, which partnered with the Food Network to provide chef-inspired meals at the airport and is also a partner in Food Network-branded food sold at concession stands and stadiums. "It's the highest revenue producer at the airport."

There are no waiters, so customers sit at tables after ordering at the counter or they can get takeout food, either made to order or readymade items like sandwiches and salads.

While the recipes are developed and branded by the Food Network, the offerings are not named for Food Network personalities, shows or chefs. Instead, the menu promises organic and sustainable ingredients and offers dishes with connections to local ingredients and regional culture, such as a Florida shrimp po'boy ($13) and a salmon burger with Key lime mayo ($14).

South Florida's Latin culture is reflected in items such as the Cuban breakfast burrito ($8) and a black beans and rice burger with "mojo mayo" ($12). Also on the menu: fried pickles with Key lime mayo ($6); sweet potato fries with Key lime tartar sauce ($5); and a Cuban sandwich ($12) with cafe con leche mayo pressed on a ciabatta roll.

Wait times can back up when flights arrive and the airport gets busy, so it's best to arrive early if you plan to sit down, as Liz Lamoureux did before flying back home to San Antonio, Texas.

"On our way here, I was saying we wanted to get here early to sit down for a drink," she said as she nibbled on edamame and sipped on the house pinot grigio.

Beverages range from espresso to entwine, the Food Network's wine brand, to locally-inspired cocktails like Lansky's Run, named for the Prohibition-era gangster Meyer Lansky.

The design of the restaurant resembles the cable network's test kitchen: a butcher block bar counter, subway tiling, stainless steel surfaces and pots and pans hanging in a row ? only here, they hang behind a cash register.

The network's logo is plastered on everything from to-go boxes to brown paper bags filled with jelly beans and chocolate-covered pretzels. Most of the TVs are tuned to the Food Network, though some show sports or news. There are also some fun facts on display: A poster near the cash register details local ingredients used in the meals, while paper placemats explain how to filet a fish and describe different cuts of beef.

"We really wanted to bring our culinary expertise to the forefront and bring the brand to life," Food Network's Kuharsky said. "I think people are going to be drawn to the brand, but it also comes down to taste."

But while the network has already put its name on consumer products like frying pans and candles, along with its concession stand and stadium food, serving quality food at an airport restaurant presents different challenges.

"Branding on the front lines has the most exposure and is different than putting your name on a logo," said Chris Tripoli, president of A'la Carte Foodservice Consulting Group, who has worked on food concepts in airports across the country. "Now that you have exposed yourself to the end user, your reputation, that Food Network brand, is going to be judged on the temperature of the green beans that day or by every bite of the sandwich."

Tripoli added that Food Network staffers on the restaurant's front lines "know their brand is only going to be as good as their last meal."

The Food Network and Delaware North Companies plan to open more outlets in the spring at the busy JetBlue terminal. Another Food Network Kitchen is scheduled to open at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by the end of 2013.?

11262012 ? Santa Clarita real estate data is key to your success in ...

If you were buying stocks, you may do a little research on how they work on your own. However, you may be more trusting of someone that is experienced in the Stock Trading game. Finding that ?Expert? in the field of mutual funds, stocks, bonds and those types of paper investments would be critical to your success in the Stock Market.

Real Estate is not too far off that topic. But finding a trusted?adviser?may prove to be a bit more difficult. When you are surfing the internet and typing in real estate keywords and questions, you are not going to see local real estate agent?s blogs float to the top of Google or Bing. You are going to be seeing ?corporate? lead generation websites that are?supplying?leads to the Highest Bidders. How can you be sure those agents, that are paying for those platforms, are worth their salt? You cannot :(

Real Estate is a funny duck. Apparently no one has come up with a way to monetize leads from the questions asked about the stock market. One day, maybe, but for now, let?s focus on the real estate Q and A market.

When it comes to experts in real estate, self proclaimed or not, you are going to want to speak with several before choosing one. I know this is a lot of work, but it?s the same if you were to have a necessary and potential life threatening medical procedure that needed to be performed ? you would want more than one Doctor to take a look at your issue(s) and give their opinion. You would also probably burn out your Google Account by asking questions within that search engine and searching the medical forums.

When you are about to spend the largest amount of money you probably ever will ? do yourself a favor ? make sure you are getting the best agent possible by checking your agent?s references and meeting with them in their offices to discuss a game plan. I promise, during that ?game plan? discussion, you will see whether or not the agent you are interviewing is worth their salt or not.

Manning's 2 TDs leads Broncos past Chiefs, 17-9

(AP) ? Peyton Manning was wooed by the Chiefs early in the offseason, after the four-time MVP had been cut loose by Indianapolis and before he signed a five-year deal with Denver.

On Sunday, he showed exactly why Kansas City was after him.

Manning threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, and led the Broncos down the field in the final minutes when the Chiefs were frantically trying to get a stop, setting up a field goal that sealed a 17-9 victory and their sixth consecutive win.

It allowed Manning to break a tie with his boss and Broncos vice president John Elway with his 149th win as a starting quarterback, trailing only Brett Favre (186) for most in NFL history.

"Peyton Manning is a Hall of Famer," Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "We played pretty good as a defense most of the game, but he made a few plays, one or two more plays than we'd like him to make, and he came up with a victory."

Naturally, Manning was quick to pass the praise to someone else.

In this case, it was Knowshon Moreno, who stepped into the starting lineup after Willis McGahee landed on injured reserve this week and ran for 85 yards. Manning also handed out kudos to Jacob Tamme and Demaryius Thomas, who were on the receiving end of his touchdown throws.

"I've got to tip my hat to Knowshon Moreno," Manning said. "He stepped up today and did a heck of a job. Really an impressive effort by him."

Not so much by the Chiefs offense.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards, but the Chiefs (1-10) were done in by penalties, missed opportunities and a conservative approach that has not yielded a touchdown since the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, a span of more than 11 quarters and 173 minutes.

They could only manage field goals by Ryan Succop for the second straight game.

"It's really about stopping the run," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. "If you can limit that run game, you put the weight on their passing game, which hasn't been that great this year."

Quinn was 13 of 25 for 126 yards and an interception.

"Hats off to our defense," Broncos coach John Fox said. "We struggled a bit against the run, but they're a very good run team. ... Something we work very hard on is the red area, and holding them to three field goals was a key in the game."

Kansas City actually established an early lead for the third straight game on Succop's first-quarter field goal, and seemed to be outplaying Denver (8-3) the entire first half.

They had a chance to go ahead 10-0 when they faced fourth-and-2 at the Denver 4, but Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel elected to kick another field goal against a team that had scored at least 30 points in five straight games, drawing a chorus of boos from the crowd.

"I thought points on the board were important," Crennel said by way of explanation.

Problem was that touchdowns trump field goals.

On the Broncos' final drive of the half, Manning completed five straight passes before finding Tamme on third-and-goal from the Kansas City 7 with 18 seconds left. The touchdown catch, on which the tight end dragged safety Eric Berry into the end zone, gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead and wiped out all the hard work that Kansas City had put in over the first 25 minutes.

Denver's Matt Prater missed his second field goal try of the game early in the third quarter, and Succop's 49-yarder gave Kansas City its first second-half lead of the season.

But once again, a failure to get into the end zone proved fatal.

Manning, who surpassed 3,000 yards passing earlier in the day, rode the legs of Moreno into Chiefs territory, and that's when he lobbed a pass over nickelback Jalil Brown and into the hands of Thomas for the go-ahead, 30-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter.

"That was a great catch down the sideline against tight coverage," Manning said.

The Chiefs twice had chances to overcome the 14-9 deficit late in the fourth, but they failed to move the ball after taking over at their own 37. After getting it back, Crennel chose to punt on fourth-and-6 at the Broncos 47 after a series of penalties ruined the drive.

It was their last chance to retake the lead.

Denver tacked on a field goal by Prater in the closing seconds, and after Jacksonville held on to beat Tennessee, the Chiefs were left as the league's only one-win team.

"We're frustrated every week. Every time we get a loss, it's frustrating," Charles said. "I don't know when it's going to stop, but hopefully we can did deep down in our souls and find a way to get out of this."

NOTES: Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster (head/neck) and S Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) left the game with injuries. ... Kansas City was 3 for 14 on third downs. ... Chiefs LB Justin Houston had two sacks. ... Broncos LB Von Miller had his 14th sack of the season.

Jennifer Rexford ? Open Internet Challenges in Mobile Broadband ...

From: The Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University

Date: Thursday, December 13, 2012 Location: 306 Sherrerd Hall Food and discussion begins at 12:30 pm. Everyone invited.

Earlier this year, the FCC created the Open Internet Advisory Committee (OIAC) to provide recommendations regarding policies and practices for preserving an open Internet.? Professor Rexford serves on the OIAC and chair its Mobile Broadband working group, which is reviewing the state of mobile broadband networks and exploring how well Open Internet principles are working in practice. With the justification that mobile broadband networks are a newer technology with unique characteristics, the FCC?s Open Internet Order treats these networks differently than traditional fixed networks. While both fixed and mobile broadband providers must disclose their management practices, mobile broadband providers have greater latitude for blocking devices and applications (as long as they do not compete with the provider?s own voice or video telephony services) and discriminating in how they serve traffic, in accordance with reasonable network-management practices.? In this talk, Professor Rexford will give an overview of the working group?s case study of AT&T?s restrictions on the use of Apple?s FaceTime application over its cellular data network, and briefly discuss the unique challenges imposed by ?chatty? mobile applications that place a large signaling load on cellular networks.

Professor Rexford, who came to Princeton in 2005 after eight and a half years at AT&T Research, is interested in Internet policy and Internet governance, stemming from her longstanding research on computer networks.? She co-chairs the Secure BGP Deployment working group of the FCC?s Communications Security, Reliability, and Interoperability Council, and chairs the Mobile Broadband working group of the FCC?s Open Internet Advisory Committee.? Collaborating with a multi-institution group of colleagues, she has published papers on ?Risking communications security: Potential hazards of the Protect America Act? (IEEE Security and Privacy) and ?Can it really work? Problems with Extending EINSTEIN 3 to critical infrastructure? (Harvard Law School?s National Security Journal).

Texas cop accused of cursing teen in video

By Mark Schnyder, NBCDFW.com

A Texas police department will investigate claims that an officer cursed and used excessive force against a teen, after the teen?s mother said she will make a complaint on Monday.

Andrew Rodriguez, 17, resisted arrest as police tried to take him into custody on an old trespassing warrant, according to his mother Kelly Pope.

A video of the incident taken by Rodriguez?s friend shows an officer in control of Rodriguez on the ground when another officer comes running over.

Read more news from NBC Dallas-Ft. Worth

?He knows he handled it badly at first, that he should have been a little more cooperative,? said Pope, who lives in Hurst, a town located between Dallas and Ft. Worth. "[The officer] comes up at a jolting sprint, kneed him right in the back of the head and as you can see on the video and says, 'If you move I?m gonna bleep bleep kill you,? Pope said, describing the video.

The officer, who identified himself on the video as "Arnold 654," also used a gay slur after the teen used it.

Pope plans to go to the Hurst Police Department on Monday to speak directly with the police chief about the incident.

"This is not behavior that the city of Hurst promotes or condones in any way,? said the Hurst Police in a statement to NBCDFW. ?We strive to build a stronger, safer community through our work around the city and will continue to do so through appropriate action.? The incident will be investigated internally."

Rodriguez declined to comment on the incident and is now back at his mother?s home.

"He's okay," said Pope of her son.? "He doesn't want any part of anything. He's a little embarrassed."

(AP) ? Alabama left no doubt it's tops in the state.

Proving it's the best team in the Southeastern Conference and perhaps the nation won't be nearly so easy.

AJ McCarron passed for four touchdowns and Eddie Lacy rushed for 131 yards and two scores to lead the second-ranked Crimson Tide to a 49-0 beatdown of rival Auburn on Saturday, the most lopsided Iron Bowl in 64 years.

The Tide (10-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) clinched the Western Division title outright and a spot in the conference title game against No. 3 Georgia with the winner likely getting a BCS national championship shot.

"To me, in all those games that I've been a part of, they are about as good as any game in the country other than the national championship game," Alabama coach Nick Saban said of the SEC title matchup.

Georgia will certainly present a tougher challenge the Tide faced Saturday.

Auburn (3-9, 0-8) completed the worst season for any team within two years of winning an Associated Press national title in what might have been the last game for embattled coach Gene Chizik.

University President Jay Gogue has only said he'll evaluate the program at season's end.

Chizik met Saban briefly at midfield, hugged McCarron, and walked off the field with cameras following his every move. He declined to discuss his future afterward.

"I'm not going to go into all of the job situation with any questions," he said. "This isn't about me. I've got a locker room of guys that are here that are very disappointed. That's my focus, I'm not going to entertain any of those questions. My focus is to be back in there with them."

Chizak said the Tigers' performance was "sad."

"Obviously that was a very disappointing loss, embarrassing loss to our state rivals," he said. "It was obvious to everybody.

"The Auburn fans, the Auburn alumni, don't deserve that."

And most haven't seen a game like this one. The biggest Iron Bowl margin was Alabama's 55-0 victory in 1948, the most lopsided in a rivalry that captivates a state.

This one could have topped that but Saban played subs for much of the second half. The Tide lost a fumble inside Auburn's 10 and then ran out the final seconds after getting to the 5.

Alabama outgained the Tigers 483-163 and had 25 first downs to Auburn's seven.

"We didn't take our foot off the gas," Lacy said. "We kept playing in the fourth quarter."

Auburn hasn't scored an offensive touchdown in the last two meetings since Cam Newton & Co. completed the rivalry's largest comeback in the Tigers' last visit to Bryant-Denny Stadium two years ago. This one supplied another milestone of sorts.

It's the first time Alabama has scored 40-plus points in two straight Iron Bowls, following last season's 42-14 win when Auburn managed to score on a kick return and fumble recovery.

The 42-0 halftime score was the same as the Tide had last week against FCS team Western Carolina, which finished 1-10. The previous largest halftime margin in the Iron Bowl was 34-0 by Auburn in 1957 in a 40-0 win during its only national title run before 2010.

"We had that sick feeling in our mouth," offensive lineman Chad Slade said. "You know, you hate to feel that way. I lost it last year, and I lose it this year. It's hard, it's real hard just to speak on it. Next year has to be a different story."

McCarron completed 15 of 21 passes for 216 yards in 2-1/2 quarters, including a pair of touchdowns apiece to Amari Cooper and Kevin Norwood.

Lacy ran 18 times for 131 yards, pinballing off defenders from a defense that ranks last in the SEC against the run.

Auburn freshman Jonathan Wallace completed 5 of 14 passes with two interceptions against the nation's top scoring defense. He's only the third freshman quarterback to start an Iron Bowl for the Tigers and first since Gabe Gross in 1998.

Wallace voiced his support for Chizik.

"He should be back. I definitely love coach Chizik and the whole coaching staff," he said. "They know exactly where this program needs to go, and they know what to do. I hope they are back next year. I really have no doubt. I really do believe they will be."

Tre Mason ran 21 times for 82 yards for Auburn, topping 1,000 for the season on the game's final play.

The Tide produced an array of big plays running and passing. McCarron and Cooper ? who had five catches for 109 yards ? connected for touchdowns of 37 and 29 yards. Norwood scored on a 7-yarder and a 38-yarder that completed the scoring with 24 minutes left.

Alabama produced touchdowns on its first seven possessions until a fumble deep in Auburn territory ended that streak.

The Tide also converted its first 11 third-down tries.

The worst news for Alabama was on the injury front. Saban said wide receiver Kenny Bell sustained a broken left leg and will have to have a rod inserted.

Auburn only pushed the ball across midfield only twice, making it as far as the Tide's 41 in the first quarter before punting. The Tigers have been outscored by 129 points in their last three SEC games, all against Top 10 SEC opponents Texas A&M, Georgia and Alabama.

The Tide shut out four opponents this season, the most in a season for Alabama since 1979. Last season's team also shut out LSU in the BCS title game in January.

"This was a great team victory," Saban said. "Everybody contributed. We asked for everyone to play their best game today. When you make a commitment to something, it comes from the heart, and I really thought our players did that."

Iconic street foods every world traveler must try

1 day

While many travelers make it a priority to book a table at Michelin-starred?restaurants around the world, some of the best food ? street food ? can be had for a fraction of the cost, in the most unlikely of places.

From stainless steel push carts and dubious-looking night market stalls, to kiosks?and the backs of bicycles, street food is ubiquitous around the world.

From the familiar New York City hot dog and Belgian pomme frites, to the venerated?Vietnamese b?nh m? and lesser-known Taiwanese stinky tofu, street food comes?in a palette of palate-pleasing dishes, from savory, deep-fried munchies like Amsterdam?s kroket to sweet treats like a Breton cr?pe.

The Daily Meal has canvassed the globe, eating everything from crowd-pleasing?gelato to a fear-inducing but oh-so-amazing spleen sandwich, to curate its list of 27?favorite street foods sure to provide any traveler???from the novice to the pro???with a?memorable, moveable feast.

Slideshow: See which?iconic street foods every world traveler must try

Takoyaki (Osaka, Japan)
Takoyaki, battered golf-ball-sized balls stuffed with octopus, are a typical street food in Japan. Made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special pan to shape the snack into a ball, the small, round treat is filled with diced or minced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onion. Takoyaki are drizzled with okonomi sauce (similar to Worcestershire) or mayonnaise.

Juso, the red light district in north central Osaka, is the best place to try takoyaki, as it was invented in Osaka. Look for takoyaki stalls near the train station.

Cr?pes (Brittany, France)
The popular thin French pancake, usually made from wheat (cr?pes de Froment) or buckwheat flour (galette), originated in Brittany in northwest France. The batter is spread onto a billig???a big, round cast-iron griddle???and spread in a circular motion with a rozell, a wooden utensil. Sweet cr?pes dusted with sugar or topped with freshly-sliced fruit and savory versions stuffed with meats and cheeses are folded into cones and sold in cr?peries across France, including Fleur de Bl? Noir cr?perie in?Saint-Quay Portrieux, where visitors can take a cr?pe-making class?and eat the results.

Empanadas (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Empanadas are hand-held pies stuffed with meat, cheese or vegetables and surrounded by pastry dough that is baked or fried. El Sanjuanino in Buenos Aires serves some of the best empanadas in the capital.

Tamales (Clarksdale, Miss.)
There are several stories about the origins of tamales in the Mississippi Delta, a leaf-shaped alluvial plain in Western Mississippi defined by the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers. Some say tamales were introduced during the U.S.-Mexican War, while others contend Mexican migrant workers brought tamales with them when they came to work the cotton fields. Still others contend the tamale was always in the area, with Native Americans making the snack. No matter its origins, the tamale is a staple of snack foods here.

Enthusiasts can tour the Southern Foodways Alliances Tamale Trail. A tamale here is smaller than Latin-style ones. Traditionally made with boiled or browned pork (but beef and turkey are also used) and masa or cornmeal and wrapped inside a corn husk, the bundles are simmered and have a grittier texture than those made south of the border. Some even fry their hot tamales here.

Abes BBQ serves bundles of hot tamales along with its famous barbecued pork, beef and ribs at the fabled crossroads of highways 49 and 61 (where blues pioneer Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil in return for prowess on the guitar.

MOSCOW, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Belarus is holding a non-deal

road show to test investor interest towards a possible sovereign

Eurobond issue, a banking source told Reuters on Friday.

He added meetings are now taking place in Singapore and Hong

Kong, without elaborating.

Belarus is looking at $500-600 million Eurobond issue, which

might be placed early next year to refinance debt falling due in

2013.

Belarus was forced to devalue its currency, the Belarussian

rouble, by 65 percent last year to deal with a large

current account deficit caused by public spending before the

presidential elections in 2010.

It had issued $1.8 billion in Eurobonds shortly before the

currency crisis, but has not tapped the market since early 2011.

Can VIA Technologies save the mobile computing future of the x86 ...

After Urgent search for an Intel savior [this same blog, Nov 21, 2012] this is a quite legitimate and important question.

Watch Cher Wang, the founder and still the chairman of the VIA Technologies (also HTC), speaking about the enterpreneurship just February this year. One of the most important traits she considers important for the success is perseverance (as she is telling at [28:50] in the Q&A session starting at [22:37]). Looking at the current, moderate by any means success of VIA, one can clearly see this attribute of her which is helping to keep VIA still afloat. One cannot resist a suspicion that she sees great opportunity for the company to come out of its current troubles of decreasing revenue. She might quite well count on the expected failure of Intel to compete effectively in the mobile computing. As the x86 (rather the 64-bit x64) is still quite important for the transition of hundreds of millions of PCs into a full mobile computing era VIA Technologies x64 chips with their very competitive Isaiah cores, as much as 4 in a package and of sufficiently low-power and low-price might indeed become the kind of saviors of that legacy hardware platform for the year 2013 and beyond. Do not forget VIA Technologies is an extremely streamlined organisation which is using the same fabless semiconductor manufacturing model as all of the ARM ecosystem.

While Intel used the Bonnell microarchitecture for its Atom processors a significantly smaller competitor, VIA Technologies (Via Technologies Inc (2388.TW)) was relying on the processor design and development work of its 100 people subsidiary, Centaur Technology to compete with the giant, using its same time introduced Isaiah microarchitecture. Both microarchitectures were developed BTW for quite a long period of 5 years* and introduced in products in 2008.
* The Bonnell story you could read in
Intel?s Atom Architecture: The Journey Begins [AnandTech, April 2, 2008]

Note that Atom-powered Windows 8 tablets will use Intel?s new Clover Trail SoC, the follow-up from Medfield. Clover Trail is effectively a dual-core version of Medfield (using Saltwell core, while Saltwell contains a 32 nm shrink of the original Bonnell), but with a souped up GPU (a dual-core SGX 544MP2 rather than a single SGX 540). It?s still 32nm ? but next year we?ll see the process-shrunk and rearchitected Silvermont-based [also the code-name of the new micro-architecture after Bonwell] Valleyview SoC, which technologically will be very exciting indeed. The ?only? question mark is the price which I would think could not go below $50 as the latest (Q1?12 intro, with the same 32nm litography) traditional Atom model D2550, having price indication publicly available, has a published tray price (i.e. for 1K units) of $47. Intel?s whole business model is standing on those extraordinary high prices by today?s standards, and these will become unsustainable in the year 2013. Here comes VIA Technologies with its x64 foundation as described here.image
(As it is a May 17, 2011 Investor Meeting slide we already know that the 22nm ?Future Product? in the upper row is ?Haswell?, and also that Silvermont will be incorporated into the same ?Shark Bay? client platform as Haswell).

Then as an update see Where is VIA? An interview with Christian Caldarone [Tom?s Hardware German Edition, Aug 30, 2012]

? My name is Christian Caldarone, born in 1972, and am currently in Germany as a company spokesperson for VIA Embedded. In addition, I am also responsible for the channel business [as Europe Business Account Manager].

TH: Our younger readers may know VIA only as a manufacturer of audio chips or Firewire controllers. So could you briefly introduce the company?

CC: VIA was founded in 1987 in California. In 1992 the company moved its headquarters to Taipei, Taiwan. Towards the end of the 1990s it came to the acquisition of the processor manufacturer Cyrix / Centaur, and on the basis of purchased know-how we developed over the following years the C3 CPUs. In 2002 the VIA Embedded Platform Division was established. Since we are focusing increasingly on the embedded market [ VIA EPIA embedded platform, editor's note]. In terms of the requirements of the future one has to primarily identify VIA for low power, high performance per watt, fanless and quiet design, and miniaturization. The synthesis of these factors from the manufacturer?s perspective can be found in the developed by VIA Mini-, Nano- and Pico-ITXdesigns.

? <to be continued after the following short insert explaining these designs>

now continue with Where is VIA? An interview with Christian Caldarone [Tom?s Hardware German Edition, Aug 30, 2012]

VIA currently employs about 2000 people worldwide. The majority of them work in the Embedded Division and in chipsets/CPUs.

TH: For a while, VIA chipsets were considered as viable alternatives to offerings from AMD, Intel and Nvidia. Today the company is no longer represented in this segment away from its own platforms, and also happens rather insignificant when compared to the product cycles of the above competitors. Has VIA been getting nowhere?

CC: No, VIA again and again presents innovations as well, such as the recently announced QuadCore processor. It runs at 1.2 GHz, supports 64-bit instruction sets, uses adaptive overclocking, and achieved a TDP of only 27.5 watts thanks to its low-power design. In addition, it is an out-of-order architecture. Unlike the products of some competitors there are four real cores, and systems stuck with QuadCore Processor + Vx11 can handle up to 16 GB of RAM. The Vx11 chipset also includes a DirectX 11-compatible GPU called VIA Chrome 645.

TH: Is VIA currently working on new x86 CPUs? The Nano/Nano X2 is now at least 5 years old [NOT TRUE as only the 65nm-based Nano is 5 years old, while the 40nm-based Nano X2 was introduced only in Q1 2011, see later] and is manufactured in 40 nm, and also the QuadCore processor is really just a variation of this design ? two Nano X2 on one die. [NOT TRUE as 4 cores on 2 dies with access to the same FSB (Front-Side Bus) are integrated together on a carrier package, see later]

CC: Of course, there will be new, further developed and improved processors, which is consequential, but currently there is nothing to announce. Our current products can compete well in their segment. [Note: In the article Skirmishes on the desktop: Nettop platforms compared [Tom?s Hardware German Edition, March 29, 2012] VIA?s Nano X2 beat in fact very well Intel?s current at that time Atom D2700, and in several cases could clearly outpace it.]

Our customers appreciate not only our portfolio but also the long product life cycle of five to seven years. Therefore, in order to maintain pin compatibility and to support the appropriate longevity of the platform, it is not possible, for example, to perform a simple die-shrink. It sounds so simple: ?The structure size is refined.? But the fact is that a die-shrink would require much reworking of the platforms.

? <to be continued later on>

Now see an Introduction To Centaur [Patrick Roberts YouTube channel, July 30, 2012]

Introduction To Centaur Technology ? 400 million transistors are in their current processor design ?

with the very recent Processor Whispers: About Austin powers and patents [Andreas Stiller on ?The H?, Nov 5, 2012]

Austin is not only the capital of Texas and home to Dell?s headquarters, but also a hub of processor development. After all, processors from Intel (Atom), AMD and Apple are designed here. But there is another company?

It?s been all but forgotten that, next to the big ones mentioned, you will also find a smaller processor company in Austin, the third of the remaining threesome of x86 developers: Centaur Technologies Inc. For 13 years now, the company has belonged to the Taiwanese chip manufacturer VIA technologies. ? the chief of the centaurs, Glenn Henry, was expecting me.

? In spite of dramatically poor financial figures for VIA ? with around $86 million, the numbers for the first three quarters of 2012 are 23 per cent below the ones from last year ? the 70-year-old is optimistic: ?We don?t cost much, so even a single per cent of the x86 cake is sufficient. Also, we have interesting new markets in China and increasingly in Brazil too.? For years, the number of employees at his company ? just below 100 ? has remained mostly constant. And, ultimately, VIA boss Wenchi Chen is one of the richest citizens of Taiwan, with sufficiently deep pockets.

Currently, work is being done on the CN-R, a small quad-core processor designed for TSMC?s 28nm process. About a year ago, Centaur released a processor called VIA QuadCore, internally referred to as CN-Q, which is divided onto two chips, in a similar way as the Pentium D was. Each single chip is a VIA Nano X2 manufactured in 40nm that was well able to compete with other chips of its class, like the Atom D510 and the AMD E-350. It is compatible with the classic Eden boards and a quad-core solution for mini-ITX boards was released a few weeks ago, the VIA EPIA P910.

Centaur still doesn?t have an integrated memory controller, for external communication they are still using the VIA V4 bus with 1333MHz, which is mostly identical to the bus of the Pentium 4. It serves as a link to the much bigger companion chip from VIA with north and south bridge. However, according to Henry, there are plans to integrate the chips into a SoC. But first, the CN-R is supposed to hit the market in the classic format with clock speeds between 1.2 and 2GHz around mid-2013. Which market that?s going to be, Henry doesn?t know yet: tablets seem likely, the netbook market is all but dead, but there?s still a niche market for small desktop PCs [?mini PCs?] and mini-servers as well as the embedded sector.

A few highlights could make the chip stand out among the competition: AVX2 and an advanced PadLock unit with new cryptography operations? Atom and Bobcat/Jaguar don?t offer either. In contrast to Intel?s Haswell processor, however, CN-R will neither support fused multiply-add nor offer a transactional memory extension, as the effort would have been too expensive.

Just a few hours before I had arrived, another economically motivated cut had been decided: instead of the initially planned central L3 cache with 4MB, Centaur chose to go down to 2MB in order to save space, costs and, above all, energy. Centaur has to work on the latter in particularto be able to compete with the big players in the business.

?

And here is the continuation of Where is VIA? An interview with Christian Caldarone [Tom?s Hardware German Edition, Aug 30, 2012]

Chipsets are pass?, embedded products are the future

? Chipsets in the traditional sense, such as Northbridge, Southbridge, LPC, etc., are now almost extinct. ?

This development has to do with the current situation. All manufacturers are increasingly focused on the platform. The idea also makes sense: when everything comes from a single source, the individual components ideally suit each other ? and demands are implemented as you wish.

Eventually AMD has decided with the acquisition of ATI, to develop their own solutions and to focus only on AMD platforms. The goals of AMD and VIA were simply too different: for AMD it was important to keep up in performance, while VIA?s vision was more of energy efficient platforms.

VIA currently has no concrete plans for the return to the chipset division. This is however not a complete rejection. A renewed commitment to the chipset segment is possible and also necessary if customer and partner needs are pronounced strongly enough.

TH: You repeatedly called the Embedded Division as VIA?s primary area of operation. The term ?embedded? is often equated with tablets, industrial PCs and control systems. What is VIA?s definition of ?embedded??

CC:That?s right, the term ?embedded? in fact can be interpreted very differently. An early definition is that the CPU is directly soldered and a GPU is integrated.

TH: According to this definition, even AMD and Intel build? ?embedded? systems with GPU and other integrated components. What sets VIA apart?

CC:VIA has offered such designs earlier. The unique selling proposition was also lower energy consumption, allowing a higher performance per watt. Here comes the platform approach to the game again, and AMD and Intel are just gone in the direction that VIA had already taken.

There are products of higher integratin in the future, so there is a change to the name and the approach. One hears again and again: ?The desktop is dead.? If you look at the current trends, we can see that everywhere. The classic desktop is ousted, various other devices take over its role. Requirements such as Always on the Move, Cloud Computing and Desktop Virtualization are put forward, thus other devices are needed and also user behavior is changed. In the thin-client area VIA is traditionally represented strong. The reason for not so clearly connecting VIA with this segment is because this is not so strongly coming from the brand. The device (as a platform) must work.

?

TH: How VIA currently defined (and future) its market. Formerly the most visible products are gone ? which wants to make money and grow? What is the strategy? Hurts the discontinuation of Windows / PC market (in the old scale)?

CC: This is a regional issue: Europe is an important market, and we are committed to continue in the embedded space. Other countries and regions specially for us are less strong on the radar. Then there is again the BRICS region [Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, note by the editor], where it first comes to ever affordable PCs, namely to provide classical desktops. One element of this is the recently introduced APC [ a mini-PC platform with a 800 MHz ARM CPU from VIA and Android 2.3 operating system, editor's note ].

In addition to these ARM based devices, of course x86-based Mini-PCs for the desktop market continue to play a role in our strategy. Here our ARTiGO product series is to be specially mentioned. The VIA ARTiGOs are indeed classic Mini-PCs for the desktop market, but they also have some embedded features and are therefore also suitable for the semi-embedded sector. In addition to the combination of ARTiGO with Windows XP and Windows 7, we were also able to test the ARTiGO A1150 and A1200 successfully with Windows Server 2008. Besides the various Windows versions Ubuntu and SuSE are also officially supported by VIA.

TH: Where VIA will surprise us in the future? The fields that are particularly prominent? Where does the company see its biggest opportunities?

Published on Sep 13, 2012 by VIAMKT. VIA Embedded was in attendance at the 2012 Digital Signage Workshop in Taipei, showcasing their range of complete package solutions for dynamic digital signage including the latest VIA Magic Box and 3D Holographic display.

CC: Our products will still be much smaller, we will consume even less electric power, and we will put even more features in an even smaller space. We see special opportunities in Digital Signage, Medical Computing and Thin Clients. Here, the thin client must be understood as a device with which to connect to the cloud.

? Thin Clients with a VIA CPU offer here a special advantage for security because our own integrated PadLock Security Co-processor can take over the encryption of data. Hardware encryption is classified as 100 times more secure than pure software-based encryption, loading the CPU significantly less, and this saves even more power here. Downright secure on-the-fly encryption can be seen as an essential component of cloud computing, and thus corresponds to the requirement of the customers. ?

?

TH: Tablets are a growing market. Will VIA in this segment offer a suitable (processor) solution? Does VIA has an ARM license? If not, would an x86 design for Win8 tablets be possible?

? In China, many manufacturers are already using [ARM] solutions from VIA. Exactly these markets are targeted by our subsidiary Wonder Media with the WonderMedia PRIZM SoC [an ARM-compatible, integrated processor, editor's note]. ?

There are other products ? medical devices or instruments - based on ARM designs. What they need is often enough to have a well-adjusted SoC. It is not always clear that there is a VIA-solution. As with the display and other components it is subject to special requirements (moisture, shock, heat, etc.). These customers also appreciate the long product life cycles. In the consumer sector, it is the opposite, since latest features require short product life cycles.

We will definitely have platforms for Windows 8 in the portfolio, for whatever kind of application. So you see, VIA Technologies could theoretically have both an ARM-based Win8 tablet and one driven on the x86-base.

?

TH: How VIA stands for low-power servers? After all, AMD has just bought SeaMicro, and HP and other companies are now using ARM chips in servers.

CC: This segment is one of the more interesting for VIA, and we expect a good chance. An ARM-based solution here would be particularly attractive and allow the clients to realize an effective and efficient platform. Linux versions and also Android run now everywhere, providing nothing in the way of the usage itself. An ARM-based server solution is limited by the performance and in scope ? so to say, the usage is very specific to the application. Therefore x86 is also important for the foreseeable future.

And also with our x86 CPUs we see good opportunities. There are efforts to use them as power-saving CPUs in all data centers of the world.

We have even more advantages with our quad processor alongside the low power consumption: CPU virtualization, the just mentioned security co-processor, and a large L2 cache by which it can compete quite well in performance with server processors of the competitors. In terms of cache throughput in so-called heavy-lifting tasks, such as database applications, for example, there is only seven percent difference to the Xeon 5110. I had already mentioned another benefit as well: the VX11 chipset and the QuadCore processor can manage up to 16 GB memory. With Intel?s Atom CPUs it is 4 GB.

Virtualization is a really exciting skill ? not least for the administration. It is possible, for example, to measure the average power consumption per virtual machine and to measure the system accordingly.

As the first choice it is advisable to use our platform together with the KVM [Kernel-based Virtual Machine] hypervisor since it is also officially supported by VIA. KVM is a very serious virtualization solution that for some time now is tightly integrated into the Linux kernel. The decision of the major Linux distributions Ubuntu and SuSE, to use KVM as their preferred hypervisor, has once again to be underlined. Another advantage arises also through the availability and development of the appropriate administrative and conversion tools, extensive cloud/IaaS and orchestrator solutions (see http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Management_Tools), which have also helped to pave the way in professional, commercial use of KVM.

The combination of the VIA QuadCore and the KVM hypervisor currently has the best virtualization per watt ratio in the x86 market. Extrapolating 8 virtual machines per VIA QuadCore (27.5 watts TDP), the average per VM incurred is only 3.44 Watt, while for 10 VMs it takes only 2.75 watt. The long product life cycle of the VIA platform also enables a consistently homogeneous landscape, in which, for example, only a single hypervisor OS image is required, which can then be loaded from a central point to any number of platforms.

But not everything can be virtualized. A good example are services such as VoIP. So one needs additionally a small server that will work then in the most cost efficient and energy saving way. And in this context, a long product life cycle and high reliability are important. Especially for the latter making electromechanical parts unnecessary is useful as well. An unnecessary fan for VIA Eden just could not fail.

Note that it has Windows 8 support and the graphics and video capabilities in the VIA VX11 and VX11H are based on S3 Graphics technology about which we should know that VIA Technologies Announces Sale of Stake in S3 Graphics [VIA Technologies press release, July 6, 2011]:

Taipei, Taiwan, July 6, 2011 ? VIA Technologies, Inc. (?VIA?) today announced the signing of definitive agreement to sell all of its shareholding in S3 Graphics Co., Ltd. (?S3 Graphics?) to HTC Corporation (?HTC?). S3 Graphics is a leading provider of innovative graphics visualization technologies used in PCs, game consoles and, more recently, mobile devices.
VIA acquired S3 Graphics in 2001 with the intention to accelerate integration of graphics capabilities with its processor and chipset products. S3 Graphics became undercapitalized in 2005, and VIA introduced WTI Investment International, Ltd. (?WTI?) as a new investor to help fund the operations and R&D initiatives. WTI is a private investment company, in which Cher Wang, Chairman of VIA, is a significant shareholder.
Under terms of the agreement with HTC, total consideration for all outstanding shares of S3 Graphics will be US$300 million. Of which, VIA will receive US$147 million; and WTI will receive US$153 million. VIA will recognize a capital gain of US$ $37 million and paid-in-capital of US$ 115 million in this transaction.

Note that this $300M acquisition of S3 Graphics by HTC was based on an ongoing lawsuit against Apple by S3 Graphics to be used in negotiating with Apple. This was lost in November last year but nevertheless could have figured positively for HTC?s recent settlement with Apple (as only HTC was able to negotiate a settlement with Apple so far) in which Apple To Get $6-$8 Per Phone Fee From HTC, Analyst Says [Forbes, Nov 12, 2012]:

Apple will receive an estimated $6-$8 per phone licensing fee from HTC under the patent litigation settlement the two companies announced on Saturday, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said in a research note this morning.
?Financial terms were not disclosed but we believe AAPL is likely getting a net licensing fee due to its much stronger patent portfolio and we think position as undisputed inventor of the modern smart phone with touchscreen,? he writes. ?We view this as a positive and the big question is whether Samsung and Motorola will also reach settlement agreements.?
He estimates that at $6-$8 per HTC phone sold, the company will generate an additional $180 million to $200 million annual revenue; he says that is lower than the range that Apple initially proposed. Wu notes that there have been previous reports that HTC pays Microsoft $5 per phone running Android.
The bottom line, he notes, is that the deal is basically immaterial to Apple. ?For a lot of companies, $180-280 million in annual licensing revenue from one vendor is material but for AAPL it will likely be immaterial to its financials given its large revenue base of $193 billion and $48 billion in net income that the investment community is forecasting for FY 2013,? he writes.
