Mountain View's kept itself as the gatekeeper for Google Glass with dev signups at I/O and a social media contest, but now it's letting some users spread the wearable computing love. Google+ is lighting up with reports that Glass Explorers are receiving emails from Page and Co. allowing them to invite a friend to snag a device by joining the program. In order to be eligible, invitees must be a US resident, at least 18 years of age, and willing to pick up the hardware in San Francisco, New York or Los Angeles. Google's told us that a "small subset of Explorers" have received the message in its continuing effort to expand the affair. Earlier today, the search giant announced that it cast a wider net for Explorers by enlisting five film schools to suss out how the contraption can be used for everything from character development to production. Head past the break for the full list of institutions.

The Second Street Bridge ?? the arched and iconic entry to downtown Columbus ? will soon have an official name, that of Robert N. Stewart, the former Columbus mayor who led the effort to make it an integral part of the city's massive Front Door project of the 1990s.
Gov. Mike Pence, a Columbus native, issued an executive order today which authorized naming of the bridge ? which has had a generic title since it opened in 1999 ? for Stewart, known by most people in Columbus as "Bob."?
"I'm just delighted with this honor," Stewart said this afternoon. "It was announced at the weekly Rotary Club meeting earlier in the day and a lot of the members had some fun with it, but I'm very humbled with this recognition."

?The way I look at it is that any two people in love who want to spend the rest of their lives together deserve to have a marriage,? said Andrussier Friday, two days after the Lansdale resident made history by performing a marriage ceremony for the first same-sex couple to be issued a marriage license in the state of Pennsylvania.
Andrussier filed the license in Norristown after a lesbian couple hired him as their wedding officiant, following the announcement by Register of Wills D. Bruce Hanes that he would issue a marriage license to any same-sex couple who wanted one.
?I?m glad they were able to reach me and that I could help them out,? he said. ?I didn?t realize it would escalate into what it did.?
The wedding was held at an undisclosed location in North Wales. Afterward, Andrussier said, he hurried to Norristown to file the paperwork personally, rather than putting it in the mail, because he did not know if or when Hanes? decision would be overturned.
The nondenominational minister wasn?t sure how things would unfold in the courts for the couple, but he was glad to participate in the exchange of vows between the two women.
?A marriage in Pennsylvania has to be between a man and a woman because there?s no documentation or wording stating what a civil union would be, so it would just be between two partners,? he said. ?A lot of it has to do with the wording in the bylaws of the state. So a commitment union would be two partners. I?m not a politician so I really don?t have any political view on this. I just happened to be available to perform the ceremony for them as the wedding officiant.?
Andrussier?s website (www.caweddingceremonies.com) notes that he creates ?each wedding ceremony custom fit to each and every couple and their desires and needs. As a result of this, a high percentage of my business is from referrals from friends or family who have participated in, or attended a wedding I have written and officiated.?
Business is now booming with referrals Andrussier may not have expected prior to last Wednesday.
?I?m willing to marry anybody as long as they have the marriage certificate and they want to spend the rest of their life together,? he said. ?If I have any more same-sex couples come to me I would marry them in a heartbeat as long as they had the license and were ready to go. I know there were 16 couples who were issued licenses and I have been contacted by a few who wanted to know if I was available on certain dates, but nothing?s been contracted.? Continued...
Whenever they decide to set the date, no couple will ever be denied the wedding ceremony of their dreams, Andrussier said.?If two people love each other enough to spend the rest of their lives together I feel they should be allowed to do it,? he said. ?There should be no labeling. It seems anymore for everybody in this country everybody has to have a label or a tag ... whether you?re from another country, race, religion, whatever. We?re getting away from what the country was founded on.?
Calls went out to a few dozen Montgomery County ministers and priests at churches of all faiths on Friday, asking where they stood on the same-sex marriage debate.
Andrussier was the only one who responded.
LANSDALE ? When Craig Andrussier, an independent ordained minister, stands in front of two men or two women who want to be united in marriage, he sees something many other people of the cloth might not.?The way I look at it is that any two people in love who want to spend the rest of their lives together deserve to have a marriage,? said Andrussier Friday, two days after the Lansdale resident made history by performing a marriage ceremony for the first same-sex couple to be issued a marriage license in the state of Pennsylvania.

China's new president, Xi Jinping, appears to have concentrated his power with remarkable swiftness in recent months. "Xi has outmaneuvered his rivals, his colleagues, and even his mentors," reports the European Council on Foreign Relations. But to what end?
The early hopes that Mr. Xi would be a political reformer are vanishing. Instead, he seems determined to impose more Communist Party control on both state and society while still pursuing economic modernization. It's a familiar recipe and profoundly misguided.
On July 16, police detained one of China's most prominent human rights activists, Xu Zhiyong, who has been at the forefront of a movement to defend citizens' rights based on the constitution and rule of law. Mr. Xu, a legal scholar, is among those who believe that the best way to battle the system is to demand that it follow its own rules - and not the whims of the party. He has also been outspoken against corruption and the widespread practice of Communist officials enriching themselves with bribes and accumulating hidden wealth. The New York Times reported that he was detained in reprisal for this campaign.
The strange thing is that Mr. Xu's positions are not far from those articulated by his new president. In December, Mr. Xi gave a speech on China's constitution. He declared, "We must firmly establish, throughout society, the authority of the constitution
and the law and allow the overwhelming masses to fully believe in the law." These words heartened some reformers who thought they might signal that Mr. Xi would put less emphasis on the party and more on the rule of law.But it has not happened. The detention of Mr. Xu suggests that the powerful machinery of Chinese state security remains on the prowl against those who challenge the party's monopoly on power. Recently, authorities issued a directive to universities, banning discussion of press freedom, judicial independence, universal values, citizens' rights, civil society cronyism and the party's historical mistakes. Thus, issues at the core of China's political black hole - a system in which the party-state stands above human dignity, freedom and rule of law - are banned. They will be discussed quietly nonetheless, but the directive is a sign of rigidity from above.
Moreover, in recent weeks Mr. Xi has been promoting still more power and prominence for the party in the nation's affairs. He has called on party members to toe a "mass line" against excess and extravagance, words that harken back to the revolutionary era of Mao. Mr. Xi seems to want to pursue economic modernization without giving an inch to its political equivalent. China's leaders like this formula, but it has always carried risks, which now may deepen. The more people taste economic good times - as hundreds of millions are doing in China today - the more they may feel empowered and entitled to a political voice. It won't happen all at once, but such aspirations can't be easily extinguished by just slamming a fist on the table, arresting more dissidents and invoking the words of Mao.

It?s been a little over three months since Twitter #Music was launched on the Web and iOS. The release signalled Twitter?s desire to broaden its influence on the Web. To be more. To leverage the ever-increasing number of tweets to disrupt the status-quo.
Yet for all its hype, Twitter #Music has been a disappointment. The mobile app sits patiently in a folder on my iPhone, gathering virtual dust and a sense of increasing irrelevancy. I have no desire to open it. Perhaps that?ll change with a future update, but for now it remains rather useless.
It?s not just me either. I?ve asked friends and family what their go-to app is for listening to music on the move. Spotify, Rdio and the default iOS Music app rank high. Twitter #Music does not.
Admittedly, that?s a small group of people to poll. But a quick inspection of the top free music apps in the App Store tells a similar story. Alongside the apps I just mentioned are Deezer, Soundcloud and Shazam, as well as a bunch of emerging services such as Bloom.fm filling out the top 20.
Twitter #Music isn?t featured. Nor is it in the top 50. Top 100? Nope. Top 200? Nope. At the time of writing, the app sits ranked 285. Ouch.
The purpose of the Twitter #Music app is three-fold; help listeners discover new music; act as an overlay for playing said music; incentivize the music industry ? particularly artists and labels ? to continue engaging with their fans on Twitter.
To help users find a bunch of brilliant new records, the app offers five charts with rather ambiguous names such as ?Emerging?, ?Unearthed? and ?Hunted?. They all sound inviting, but I couldn?t tell you what the difference is between any of the three.
Tapping one reveals a very compact grid filled with tiny square display pictures. Each of them represents an artist and they?re ranked in accordance with their popularity. The interface is pretty terrible though and at times completely bewildering. The various images are the size of my fingernail and reveal next to nothing about the artist or the sort of music they play. Twitter has also chosen to show their Twitter handle by default ? rather than the artist?s name ? which only adds to the confusion.
Selecting a specific artist then reveals a jarring profile page that tries to blend both their Twitter account and more of these tiny cuboid images. It?s the same story in the app?s ?Suggested? and ?#NowPlaying? sections. Everything feels unrefined and lacks consistent aesthetics.
Discovering new music should be a visually stunning and frictionless experience. Soundwave, Bloom.fm and even the ?Discover? tab in Spotify do a much better job of this than Twitter #Music by keeping their respective interfaces refreshingly simple and uncluttered. Twitter?s mobile app just feels messy in comparison.
Twitter #Music would also be a novel proposition if it offered its own digital storefront or an on-demand streaming service. But it doesn?t do that either. Tracks are either 30-second previews from iTunes with direct store links ? another bid to get music labels and artists on side ? or only supported with an active Spotify or Rdio subscription.
It begs the question though: why would a Spotify or Rdio subscriber leave their dedicated mobile app for this? There?s no way to create custom playlists, queue tracks or access premium features offered by these more robust and expansive services. The idea, presumably, is to reinforce Twitter #Music?s discovery options by giving users the ability to listen to new tracks in their entirety.
Twitter #Music lacks a defining feature or hook to keep users engaged. It?s an odd blend of ideas that never seem to mesh or offer a significant value proposition to the listener. There?s some potential here though and plenty of time for Twitter to turn it around ? but no wonder it?s performing so poorly in the App Store at the moment.

In the past few weeks, rumor mills have been frequently spitting out information on Sony?s forthcoming Honami aka i1. We have seen rendered and real-life photos?of the device, and now GadgetHelpLine has posted a set of photos showing the Honami alongside the Xperia Z and the interface of its rumored 20-megapixel camera.
The comparison photos show both the Honami and the Xperia alongside each other and design-wise both the devices look identical. As we have reported before, the design language remains the same, sporting the now familiar straight-edged design. The only differentiating factor is that the Honami is slightly longer than the Xperia Z.
On the camera front, the interface is quite different to what we have seen on previous Xperia smartphones. According to the pictures, the camera includes features like Timeshift burst mode, ?Broadcast live video to Facebook? and Photo Effects. One interesting feature is the AR Effect, which seems to use augmented reality to overlay different backgrounds to the photo you are clicking.
As with most leaks, we ask you take the above information with the proverbial pinch of salt.

Chromecast looks like a black thumb drive and fits into the back of a television. Simply plug in Chromecast, connect it to Wi-Fi, and then videos stream over the Internet to your TV. Users can continue other activities on their phones or laptops while streaming content onto their television. This means you can start watching Netflix via your iPhone, and pause then the show a few minutes later from your laptop, according to a review by Mashable.
?Of course people would want to watch YouTube and Netflix on the device with the biggest screen, but the user experience on the TV has been so difficult,? says Rishi Chandra, a director of product management at Google in an interview with Bloomberg after the product?s unveiling.?
Chromecast is compatible with Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows operating systems ? and costs $35, putting it as one of lowest-priced TV hookups.
The contraption seems surprisingly user-friendly ? and that might just be the point. Google has been moving away from just being an Internet company, and is trying to expand the brand by becoming a product innovator as well. Ventures such as Google Glass, the Chromebook laptop, and Chromecast are part of the company?s effort to expand its reach.
Chromecast isn?t the first TV-streaming device from Google. The company launched the Nexus Q in June 2012, but it received a round of negative reviews and is no longer on sale. A "Google TV" device has also reportedly been in the works for a while, but hasn't been fine-tuned well enough for release yet.
But the company still faces some stiff competition from other TV-streaming companies. Apple has its own streaming set-top box, Microsoft has the Xbox 360, and Sony has its PlayStation 3 ? the latter two were designed for video games, but have expanded into steaming video. However, the low cost of Google's product ? Apple TV is $99, the Xbox starts at $199, and PlayStation 3 runs upward of $200 ? might give it an edge with non-gamers looking to kickback and tap into Netflix or YouTube.?
Chromecast is on sale at Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, and Google?s Play Store.?
