With six Republican candidates left pursuing the nomination and only a few days left before the New Hampshire primary, Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., hosted a debate on Saturday. Former Sen. Rick Santorum and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were on the defensive against Texas Congressman Ron Paul, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
The following are a selection of some of the more memorable quotes from the second half of the debate as posted on YouTube.
* "I would send troops back into Iraq. I think we start talking with the Iraqi individuals there -- the idea that we allow the Iranians to come back into Iraq and take over that country with all of the treasure both in blood and money that we have spent in Iraq, because this President wants to kowtow to his liberal, leftist base, and move out those men and women... he could have renegotiated that time frame." -- Perry suggested that Iran would move in and establish control over Iraq due to the timing of America's exit from the conflict.
* "We would have saved ourselves a lot of grief if we only had gone to war in a proper manner. And the proper manner is the people elect congressmen and senators to make a declaration of war and then we become the Commander-in-Chief and we make these decisions." -- When asked to address foreign policy, referred to as his "Achilles heel", Paul noted that he didn't want Iran to get a nuclear weapon.
* "Now, Ahmadinejad announced right after the election polls were closed that he won with 60-some percent of the vote and the President of the United States said "Well, that sounds like a legitimate election". Obviously, a Chicago politician." -- Santorum used his foreign policy discussion point to criticize both Paul and President Obama on their approach to Iran.
* "China is stealing our intellectual property, our patents, our designs, our know-how, our brand names. They're hacking into our computers, stealing information from not only corporate computers but from government computers, and they're manipulating their currency." -- Romney explained his views on China in the sixth and final part of the debate.
* "He doesn't quite understand the situation." -- Huntsman translated a Chinese phrase to counter Romney's assertions, suggesting his measures would lead to a trade war.
* "I agree with him. A little bit harsh on President Obama who, I'm sure in his desperate efforts to create a radical European socialist model, is sincere." -- Immediately after Romney outlined his economic vision, Gingrich said he had a "good message", while poking fun at the President.
