In what had to be one of the most beautiful evenings in weeks, about 150 people came out to show their support for the unveiling of a new mural at the Richmond ROSMY youth center.
?When the youth talk about ROSMY, they say this is a place were they feel safe, were they feel at home,? said Beth Panilaitis, Executive Director of ROSMY, as she addressed the eager crowd. ?And now we no longer have a drab wall, we have a a visual depiction of what community really is.?
The Mural covers the entirety of the north-facing wall of the 2311 Westwood Avenue location. It was a collaboration between the ROSMY youth and the local art non-profit group Art 180. Though the entire project came together in a little over a month, the detail and final presentation of the mural shows great attention to detail, and lots and lots of love.
This is not the first project Art 180 has done with ROSMY, the two groups have worked together on numerous arts projects in the past. But this has by far been the largest endeavor for the two groups. Art 180?s Program Manager Betsy Kelly was on site at the opening and said the ongoing partnership between the two groups was a great example of the work Art 180 is trying to do.
?All our programs use the tools of art to encourage young people to express themselves and to encourage their personal development?? said Kelly, ?LGBTQ youth face challenging circumstances, so we felt it was important to work with them? this mural is a prime example of these young people sharing their stories.?
Local artists Chris Milk Hulburt and Julie Elkins worked with the kids to help develop their ideas, and gave them guidance in the painting process. Both spoke briefly to explain the process the fun they had working with the youths.
?We worked a long time with the kids before we even had any kind of vision to put on the wall, and it was amazing working with ROSMY to foster a sense of trust and fun,? said Hulburt. ?The idea that this would not be our mural, but it would be ROSMY?s mural really worked out.?

Elkins spoke more to the early days of the project, working with the kids to make a mural that they could really call their own. ?We worked to develop the mural to be about the values they had, and the came up with like 50 words ? everybody went and picked their favorite words and the most popular word was love, and the runner-up was community.? said Elkins.
Some of the youth who helped paint the mural spoke as well. One girl said, though the heat was nearly unbearable, the energy behind the project lead to forging new friendships among the youth. ?I found it to be a good bonding experience. Even the younger groups that I didn?t know much about, it was really cool bonding with them? It?s really good knowing that ROSMY can be represented in this way, rather than a blank, bland white wall that it was before. I think its great that it turned out like this ? it represented ROSMY perfectly.?
A gender nonconforming youth spoke more about how important ROSMY had been in his life since he started coming to the center a few years ago. ?You?d be surprised how many kids think about becoming a woman when they see a 90?s editorial with Kate Moss in it? or how many kids have an internal struggle when having to chose between the women and mens restroom.?
But jokes about cover models aside, he expressed how grateful he was that ROSMY was there to support him in his time of need. ?ROSMY was able to provide me with that validation and that sense of community and support that helped me become a young man who is socially aware and I?m so grateful. This mural is a great way to show how amazing this community is.?

New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after a sexting scandal, admitted Tuesday that his Internet shenanigans didn?t stop when he stepped down in disgrace.
Hours after a gossip website published raunchy texts and explicit photos it said were from 2012, Weiner held an extraordinary press conference ? accompanied by his wife Huma Abedin, an aide to Hillary Clinton ? to apologize and ask voters for a second chance.
"Some of these things happened before my resignation. Some of them happened after," Weiner said without providing any specifics.

And in her first public remarks on the scandal, a clearly nervous Abedin said it took ?a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy? to put her marriage back together.
"It was not an easy choice in any way but I made the decision that it was worth staying in this marriage,? she said. ?I didn?t know how it would work out but I did know that I wanted to give it a try.
"I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him,? she added. ?And, as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward.?
Weiner called the press conference after a gossip website called The Dirty published an interview with an anonymous woman who claimed she had an online relationship with him between July and November 2012 ? more than a year after his resignation.

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have," said Weiner, who has been leading some polls for the Democratic nomination for mayor and balked at calls from opponents to drop out of the race.
"While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me," he said, calling it ?problematic to say the least and destructive to say the most."
Weiner had even told NBC 4 New York in April, as he was weighing a mayoral bid, that there could be more revelations coming.
"Some things may come out that are true," he said at the time. "Some things are not.?... Basically, New Yorkers know the story. I did it. I did it with multiple people. These things were wrong and inappropriate, and I never should have been dishonest about it. They played out in the most public and embarrassing way possible. And that?s it."
On Monday, the Dirty claimed that Weiner ? who allegedly used the alias Carlos Danger ? met the unnamed 22-year-old woman on the social-networking site Formspring in July 2012, sent her lewd photos and had phone sex with her before the relationship "fizzled."
He promised her a job and a condo, said the site, which posted pictures of body parts and graphic messages about sex acts.
"Even post scandal, I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him," the woman was quoted as saying. "I thought I loved him. Pretty pathetic."
Weiner was a six-term congressman representing the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and Abedin was pregnant when a photo he sent on Twitter ? of himself in his underwear ? sparked an uproar in the late spring of 2011.
After initially denying it was him in the picture or that he sent it, Weiner eventually came clean, confessing that he had carried on "inappropriate" conversations through Twitter, Facebook, email and the phone with six women over three years.
But less than two years after the stunning fall from grace, Weiner, 48, appeared to be in the midst of a remarkable, and carefully orchestrated, comeback.

Two months after he announced a return from political exile to run for his hometown's biggest job, he was near or at the top in several polls, despite a barrage of pun-filled front-page headlines focusing on his salacious history.
It's unclear if the admission his reckless behavior continued after it was first exposed will hurt his standing with voters, but three mayoral contenders have already urged Weiner to withdraw from the race.
"The sideshows of this election have gotten in the way of the debate we should be having about the future of this city," said Bill de Blasio, one of his Democratic contenders. "And yes, I'm talking about Anthony Weiner.? Enough is enough."
Weiner said he had no intention of calling it quits. He?s one of several politicians caught up in sex scandals who are mounting comebacks ? including former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who is running for city comptroller five years after a romp with a prostitute was revealed.
With just 49 days to go before the Democratic primary in the mayoral race, Weiner said he was surprised ?that more things didn?t come out sooner.?
He apologized several times to Abedin and to anyone he ever sexted, took full responsibility for the sexting and said he didn?t blame anyone for being ?curious? about it.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? A senior United Nations team tasked with investigating the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria's civil war arrived in Damascus Wednesday to discuss with government officials a possible inquiry into such attacks.
This is the first such trip by international experts and the talks are expected to be thorny ? focusing on about a dozen incidents in which chemical arms were allegedly used. The rebels, the U.S. and others have accused the regime of using the weapons of mass destruction, while Damascus and its ally Russia have blamed the rebels for such attacks.
The team has been invited by the Syrian government to discuss the terms of a possible probe.
Damascus has requested the United Nations investigate only one of the reported attacks ? a March 19 incident in the northern village of Khan al-Assal in which both rebels and the government accuse each other of using chemicals weapons ? but refused inquiries into other alleged attack sites in the central city of Homs, Damascus and elsewhere.
The U.S. and U.N. officials have called on Assad's regime to grant the United Nations team unfettered access to investigate all allegations of possible chemical weapon use.
Swedish chemical weapons expert Ake Sellstrom and U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane arrived from neighboring Lebanon for a two day visit, during which they are to meet with senior Syrian officials, the U.N. said in a brief statement issued in the Syrian capital.
The Assad regime is said to have one of the world's largest stockpiles of chemical weapons, including the mustard gas and the nerve agent sarin.
There are concerns that Assad might use them on a large scale, transfer some of them to the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group or that the chemical agents could fall into the hands of al-Qaida militants and other extremists among the rebels.
Khan al-Assal, which lies on the southwestern edge of the embattled city of Aleppo, was under government control in March but was captured by the rebels earlier this week. Even if the U.N. team is granted access to Khan al-Assal from both sides, it may be difficult to find evidence from the attack because so much time has passed.
In June, the United States said it had conclusive evidence that President Bashar Assad's regime used chemical weapons against opposition forces. That crossed what President Barack Obama called a "red line," prompting a U.S. decision to begin arming rebel groups, although that has not happened yet.
On Tuesday, U.N. Mideast envoy Robert Serry told the Security Council that the U.N. has received 13 reports of alleged chemical weapons use in Syria. He said Sellstrom's team is studying this and other material.
"There is a growing body of limited but persuasive information showing that the regime has used and continues to use chemical weapons, including sarin," said British U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.
Russia, Syria's close ally, has called the chemical weapons allegations against Assad's regime groundless, claiming Russian experts determined that Syrian rebels made sarin nerve gas and used it in the Khan al-Assal attack, in which 31 people died.
More than 93,000 people have been killed since the Syrian conflict started in March 2011, according to U.N. estimates.
In violence Wednesday, state-run media said a volleyball coach who was a former national team player was killed in an ambush near Damascus.
The state news agency said 34-year-old Firas al-Eid, who coached the women's national youth team, was killed when gunmen fired at his car while he was driving from the central city of Homs to Damascus late Tuesday.
A Syrian General Sports Federation official, Tareq Hatem, told SANA on Wednesday that "terrorists" were behind the attack, a term the government uses for rebels fighting to oust Assad.
The countryside between Damascus and Homs, Syria's third largest city, has recently been the scene of heavy fighting between government troops and rebels.
